BUNKIE – St. Edmund looked to stay undefeated after its trip to Bunkie.
Heading into fourth quarter leading 9-7, it looked like the Blue Jays might do just that.
But Bunkie scored on a late touchdown to steal a 14-9 win.
Since 2011, St. Edmund has opened every season 1-1. The 2010 Blue Jays started the season 2-0.
A scoreless first period included five punts between the Jays and Panthers.
The Bunkie defense controlled the first half as the Jays were stopped on fourth down, lost a fumble on the next possession and was forced to punt four other drives.
St. Edmund was held to 12 negative yards on 16 plays in the first half.
After recovering a fumble at the Blue Jay 8 late in the half, Bunkie’s Hayden Sauseda scored on a three-yard run.
The PAT increased the Panthers’ lead to 7-0 with 1:24 left in the second period.
St. Edmund was forced to punt after another three-and-out, but two plays later Will Turk picked off Graham Rebouche’s pass and raced 40 yards to the end zone as time expired in the half.
The two-point conversion pass attempt was intercepted as the Jays trailed 7-6 at the break.
Both teams were forced to punt to open the third quarter and the Jays had good field position near midfield to start its second drive of the period.
St. Edmund moved 34 yards in seven plays and Peyton Marcantel’s 25-yard field goal gave the Blue Jays a 9-7 lead with 4:39 left in the quarter.
The Blue Jay defense stopped Bunkie on fourth down and the offense moved the ball 23 yards to the Panther 16 but a missed field goal halted the scoring opportunity.
St. Ed’s quickly had the ball back on a fumble recovery with 11:53 left in the game, but the Jays were again stopped on fourth down.
After an exchange of punts, a Blue Jay fumble proved costly as Bunkie moved 38 yards in just four plays to grab the lead on a 30-yard pass from Rebouche to Lataj Howard.
The PAT pushed the Panthers ahead, 14-9 with 2:59 left in the game.
Bunkie then sealed the win with back-to-back interceptions by Howard and Bryce Howell.
SEH was limited to 53 yards of total offense, while Bunkie finished with 187 yards on the night.
St. Ed’s entertains Avoyelles Friday.
