Class 4-A All-State list released

Although their roads didn’t end where they had hoped entering the Class 4A state football playoffs, both Neville defensive back Andrew Cagle and Lakeshore quarterback Christian Westcott had seasons their respective schools will be talking about for quite some time.
As a result, Cagle was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Defensive Most Valuable Player in 4A, and Westcott was the Offensive MVP.
A defensive lineman and fullback in the 2018 season, Westcott was moved to quarterback in the vaunted Titans offense this past spring, and it certainly paid dividends for coach Craig Jones.
All he did was account for 73 offensive touchdowns, all the while passing for 2,790 yards and 1,367 rushing for 13-1 Lakeshore.
Even in the 64-55 semifinals loss to Warren Easton, Westcott, an All-State player on defense as a junior, proved how dynamic he was in the fourth quarter alone. In his final 12 minutes of high school football, he passed for 279 yards, rushed for 45 more and had his hand in five touchdowns.
In his final two games, he accounted for 16 total touchdowns.
Cagle was a force for the Tigers, which gave up 14 or fewer points in seven of their 11 victories this season.
In all, the District 1-4A Defensive MVP had 73 tackles with four interceptions and six pass breakups. He added two fumble recoveries, and scored two defensive touchdowns.
For Coach of the Year, there was little question Karr’s Brice Brown had done his best work in leading the Cougars to their fourth consecutive Class 4A state championship.
In losing a plethora of seniors from the 2018 team, Karr started the season slow and some wondered if this was the season they finally would be knocked from their perch.
However, following a 47-12 loss to Catholic, the Cougars quickly regained their focus and won 10 straight games on the way to another title. They won their first four playoff games in dominating fashion – by an aggregate score of 188-70 – before winning a dogfight for the second consecutive season in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome over rival Warren Easton, 35-34.
Eunice lineman Jordan Oglesby was named to the Defensive first team, while Lane Devillier was placed on the honorable mention list.
