Gueydan sweeps Blue Jays

Gueydan spoiled St. Edmund’s home opener Tuesday night with a sweep over the Blue Jays.
In the girls action, the Honey Bears (3-3) rolled to a 56-36 victory over the Lady Jays (2-3).
Gueydan jumped out to a 6-0 lead, sparked by four points from Kendra Petry.
The Lady Jays closed the gap to 6-5 with buckets by Gabby Fontenot, Maggie Larriviere along with a freee throw by Abby Miller.
The Honey Bears responded with four more points by Samantha Romero and a jumper by Emily Gaspard as Gueydan moved ahead, 12-5.
Fontenot drilled a trey at the buzzer as the Lady Jays closed the gap to four points.
Gueydan added five points to its lead to open the second quarter before Larriviere hit a free throw to close the gap to 17-9.
A drive in the lane by Ashari Terry gave the Honey Bears a 19-9 advantage with 5:45 left before intermission.
The Lady Jays rallied with a trey from Kinsley Marcantel followed by seven points from Fontenot to force a 19-19 with 1:52 remaining.
A three-point play by Petry and two free throws from Terry gave Gueydan a 24-18 lead at the break.
St. Edmund battled to stay in the game early in the third quarter as Larriviere and Miller hit buckets.
Gueydan outscored the Lady Jays 14-4, sparked by a pair of three pointers from Terry for a 38-23 lead.
Mary Beth Lafleur hit a trey at the 1:15 mark to help St. Edmund close the margin to 38-26 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
Lady Jay Savannah Devillier scored on a put-back shot early in the final period, but Gueydan responded with a 6-0 run .
Lafleur hit a jumper with 6:13 left to close the gap to 42-30, but the Honey Bears answered with a 7-0 run including a trey by Terry.
The Lady Jays then mounted a 5-2 run, sparked by buckets fromFontenot and Camille Leger to close the gap to 51-35 late in the game.
The two teams finished the contest at the free throw line along with a drive in the lane by Gueydan’s Kirsten Reed as the Honey Bears sealed a 56-36 win.
Gueydan finished with three players in double figures, led by Terry (23 points), Petry (15) and Reed (12).
Fontenot led St. Edmund with 14 points, while Miller, Larriviere and Lafleur all chipped in five points each.
After competing in the Elton tournament this weekend, the Lady Jays will entertain Pine Prairie at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Gueydan 56, St. Ed’s 22
Gueydan jumped out to a 26-7 halftime lead as the Bears cruised to a 56-22 victory in the Blue Jays’ season opener.
Gueydan (1-1) exploded for a 12-0 run to open the game, sparked by six points from Cameron Maxile and five points by Noah Boudreaux.
Alex Dupre hit a pair of free throwa at the 2:55 mark for the first Blue Jay points and later added another one to close the gap to 14-3.
Alex Williams hit a free throw late in the first period to begin a 7-0 run that moved into the second frame.
After Easten Coleman scored for the Jays, Gueydan answered with a three-pointer by Boudreaux and a drive by Williams to push the Bears ahead, 21-3 midway through the second quarter.
Free throws by Blue Jays’ Drake Trahan and Peyton Marcantel helped close the gap to 24-7, but a layup by Dominic Touche in the final minute increased the Bears’ advantage to 19 points at the break.
Gueydan dominated the third period with an 11-0 run, aided by four points from Mark Clark, a deuce from Maxile along with five team free throws.
Trailing 37-7 as the game moved to the fourth quarter, the Jays finally scored on two free throws by Carter Andrus.
Christian Fontenot later scored in the lane to close the margin to 41-19 with 5:39 left.
The Bears answered with buckets by Maxile, Tripp Hanks and Touche as Gueydan continued to push in points.
Dupre hit 10-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter to help the Jays have a 15-point surge.
Guydan closed the game with buckets by Kevin Cormier and Touche to seal the 34-point win.
Maxile led Gueydan with 14 points, while Dupre’s 13 points led the Blue Jays.
St. Edmund (0-1) will entertain Class C’s Northside Christian (0-11) at 6 p.m. today.
