Hornets sting No. 7 Blue Jays

No. 10 Catholic High of Pointe Coupee scored two second half touchdowns as the Hornets stunned No. 7 St. Edmund 19-12 in the opening round of the LHSAA Division IV playoffs.
CHPC (8-2) advances to take on No. 2 Ascension Catholic, 52-8 winners over No. 15 Hanson Memorial.
St. Edmund finishes the season at 9-2.
“I am proud of this team as they fought all game long,” Andy Hargroder said. “We battled and fought well but just came up short.”
“It was a great group of seniors that led the whole way for back-to-back district titles.”
After forcing the Hornets to punt on the opening drive of the game, the Blue Jays then moved the ball 80 yards in 12 plays, sparked by several strong runs by Brock Bieber and first down conversion run by Jack Miller to keep the drive alive.
Four plays later, Miller broke loose for a 25-yard touchdown scamper.
The PAT was blocked but the Jays led, 6-0 with 29 seconds left in the first quarter.
Catholic answered with a nine-play, 58 yard drive, aided by two key runs by quarterback Aiden Vosburg to move the Hornets to the Jays’ 25.
On third-and-8, Matthew Langloi ran 22 yards for the touchdown.
Cameron Docteau’s kick pushed the Hornets ahead, 7-6 with 8:35 remaining in the half.
The Blue Jays quickly responded as Miller broke up the middle for a 71-yard kickoff return to the end zone.
The PAT was blocked but St. Edmund regained a 12-7 advantage with 8:21 left before intermission.
Catholic Pointe Coupee drove the ball into the Blue Jay territory before Clay Miller picked off a Hornet pass at the SEH 15 with 4:55 left in the period.
The Blue Jays moved the ball into CHPC territory before Nick Carrier picked off a Miller pass to stop the drive at the Hornet 32.
After the Blue Jays were forced to punt on the opening drive of the second half, the Hornets then started an 11-play, 88 yard drive that took 4:48 off the clock.
Led by several runs by Vosberg and a face mask penalty against the Jays helped the Hornets move the ball past midfield.
A holding penalty and a quarterback sack seemed to stall the Hornets’ drive, but a key run by Langloi moved the ball to the Jays’ 12.
Two plays later, Collin Grezati scored from nune yards out.
The two-point conversion run failed, but the Hornets led 13-12 with 4:14 remaining in the third period.
The defenses then took over as both teams exchanged punts and battled for field position.
The Hornets grabbed a key stop late in the game as the Blue Jays were stopped on fourth down at the SEH 27.
It took Catholic just three plays to seal the win as Grezati scored on a 20-yard run.
The two-point conversion run failed but the Hornets led 19-12 with 49 seconds left in the game.
The St. Edmund offense had one last chance after squib kick was covered near midfield.
Runs by Carter Lejeunee and Marcantel moved the ball to the Hornets 32 before time ran out on the Blue Jay season.
