Hornets sting St. Eds in sweep

Grand Lake left St. Edmund with a pair of key district wins over the Blue Jays Tuesday night.
The Lady Hornets (14-10 overall, 4-1) held onto first place in District 4-1A with a 63-49 win over the Blue Jays.
Grand Lake opened the game with an 11-0 run before St. Ed’s Gabby Fontenot drained a trey at the 5:05 mark.
Abby Miller would later hit a free throw and a lay-up and Maggie Larriviere scored in the lane to help the Lady Jays close the gap to 18-8.
St. Ed’s Mary Beth Lafleur hit two free throws in the closing minute, but the Lady Hornets held a 25-10 first quarter lead, sparked by 11 points from both Kailey Murrell and Josie Ogea.
The Lady Jays regrouped for a 9-3 run to begin the second quarter, sparked by five points from Kinsley Marcantel.
Miller added four points and Fontenot hit a jumper to help close the margin to 32-25 late in the frame.
Marci Monte drilled a trey at the buzzer to lift the Lady Hornets to a 35-25 halftime advantage.
St. Edmund continued to battle early in the third quarter, capped by a trey from Fontenot to close the gap to 36-33.
Grand Lake answered with an 11-2 run to end the period with a 47-35 advantage.
Miller scored twice in the lane and Fontenot hit a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter to close the margin to 57-46.
Grand Lake finished with a 6-0 run before Fontenot’s trey in the final seconds to close the gap to 63-49.
Fontenot led the Lady Jays with 19 points, while Miller chipped in 15 points.
Murrell led the Lady Hornets with 23 poimts, while Ogea added 14 points.
Monte contributed 12 points and Chloee Babineaux chipped in 11 points.
In boys action, Grand Lake remained perfect in district with a 91-27 win over the Blue Jays.
The two teams battled early as St. Edmund forced a 4-4 tie with two buckets by Alex Dupre.
Dupre later added a drive in the lane to close the gap to 9-6.
The Hornets (13-5, 3-0) moved ahead 18-6 before a jumper by Henry Brown and another bucket by Dupre closed the margin to 18-10 as the game moved to the second period.
After a free throw by Dupre to begin the second frame, Grand Lake exploded for a 14-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Aaron Young.
Carter Andrus hit two free throws at the 3:51 mark to slow the Hornets’ run.
Dupre’s lay-up and two free throws by Easten Coleman helped the Jays pull closer, 36-17.
But Grand Lake finished the half with a 13-0 run, including five points from Young to lift the Hornets to a 49-17 halftime margin.
Andrus scored in the lane and Christian Fontenot later hit a free throw early in the third period, but the Hornets continued to add to its lead with treys by Kael Delcambre and Drew Young.
Another bucket by Andrus was answered with a 8-0 Hornet run.
Brown hit a trey and Andrus scored on a put-back bucket to help the Jays close the gap to 69-27.
Back-to-back treys from Drew Young and Aaron Young pushed Grand Lake ahead 75-27 as the game moved to the final period.
The Hornets sealed the win with a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter, including eight points by Adam McFatter.
Delcambre led Grand Lake with 20 points, while Aaron Young chipped in 17 points.
Drew Young and McFatter added 12 points each.
Dupre scored 11 points for the Blue Jays (0-11, 0-3), while Andrus finished with eight points and Brown added five points.
St. Edmund continues district play at Hamilton Christian Friday night.

St. Ed’s 49, Oberlin 33
The Lady Jays exploded for an 18-4 second quarter to run as St. Edmund rolled to a 49-33 win at Oberlin last Friday.
The Lady Tigers (5-11, 1-2) opened the game with a 5-3 lead, as Kristian Anderson and Kaitlyn Anderson scored Victoria Carrier added a free throw for OHS.
St. Edmund’s Camille Leger scored a bucket and KInsley Marcantel added a free throw for the only Lady Jay points in the period.
St. Edmund (6-9. 3-1) used balanced scoring to break the game open in the second frame, led by five points from Miller and four by Leger.
Lafleur chipped in three points, while Fontenot, Savannah DeVillier and Larrivierie added two points each to push St. Ed’s ahead, 21-9 at the break.
The Lady Jays fought for a 14-9 third quarter lead, aided by seven points from Leger.
Marcantel added four points for the Lady Jays as St. Edmund took a 35-18 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Oberlin’s Heidi Menier hit two treys and added another bucket to spark the Lady Tigers’ late rally.
Leger and Fontenot scored four points each in the quarter for the Lady Jays, while Larriviere, Lafleur and DeVillier added two points each.
Leger finished with 17 points to lead the Lady Jays, while Miller, Larrivierre and Fontenot contributed six points each.
Marcantel and Lafleur chipped in five points each and DeVillier finished with four points.
