Iota routs Jays at Turkey tourney

VILLE PLATTE – Iota  began with a 28-5 first quarter run as the Bulldogs cruised to a 61-34 win over St. Edmund in the Sacred Heart of Ville Platte Turkey Tournament.

Dylan Hebert drilled two treys and added an inside bucket while Colby Wilson scored off a steal as Iota pushed ahead, 10-0.

Christian Fontenot scored on a put-back bucket to give the Blue Jays its first points with 4:59 left in the opening period.

Hebert  and Connor Story each drained a  three-pointer and Wilson scored underneath as the Bulldogs forged ahead, 19-2.

A three pointer by Blue Jay Alex Dupre closed the gap to 14 points, but Iota’s Jeron Latiolais scored inside and Hebert finished the period with five more points.

Wilson scored off a steal and later added a free throw before Hebert drained his fifth trey and Carter Young hit from the baseline to extend Iota’s lead to 36-5 with 5:48 left before intermission.

Dupre drilled a jumper and later a three-pointer as the Blue Jays battled to close the gap to 38-10.

After a free throw by St. Ed’s Fontenot, Wilson scored with a put-back bucket to push the Bulldogs ahead, 40-11 with 2:08 left.

Stephan Thibodeaux scored a three-point play with 13 seconds left in the second period to pull the Jays closer, 40-14.

St. Edmund went on an 8-0 run to begin the third quarter, sparked by five points from Carter Andrus and a trey by Dupre to close the gap to 40-22 with 5:29 remaining.

Young pushed in six points for the Bulldogs and Kobe Dardar converted a three-point play as Iota forged ahead, 53-12.

In the closing minute of the quarter, Dupre scored inside and then hit a trey as the Blue Jays trailed 53-29 as the game moved to the final period.

The two defenses dominated the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs outscored the Blue Jays, 8-5.

Austin Gradney scored on a second-chance bucket for the Jays, but Hunter Deville scored on an inbounds pass as the Bulldogs led, 55-31.

Thibodeaux hit two free throws for St Edmund, but then Iota’s Deville drove the lane and Tyrone Charlot added three points to close the Bulldog scoring.

Gradney hit a free throw in the final seconds as the Blue Jays made the final margin to 27 points.

Thibodeaux led Iota with 19 points, all in the first half, while Young chipped in 11 points.

Dupre led St. Edmund with 18 points.

 

SHVP 57, SEH 44

VILLE PLATTE - For the second time in a week, Sacred Heart of Ville Platte faced rival St. Edmund.

The Lady Trojans grabbed a 57-44 win over the Lady Jays in the first round of the annual Turkey Tournament.

Sacred Heart jumped out to a 14-5 first quarter lead sparked by five points from Andie Landry and a trey by Sydney Shiver.

St. Edmud was led by a basket from Gabby Fontenot and free throws by Abby Miller and Maggie Larriviere.

The two teams battled for control in the second quarter as Sacred Heart outscored St. Edmund 13-12.

Erin Fontenot poured in eight points, while Catherine Poche and Moira Parks each added a bucket for the Lady  Trojans.

Fontenot had five points in the period for St. Edmund, while Camille Leger and Jill Simpson also scored for the Lady Jays.

With a 27-17 advantage at the break, Sacred Heart then went on an 18-11 run in the third period.

Erin Fontenot, Parks, Shiver and Caroline Dupre all chipped in four points in the quarter to give the Lady Trojans a 45-28 advantage heading into the final period.

Allison Lafleur led the Lady Jays with five points in the third period, while Gabby Fontenot added three points.

St. Edmund went on a 16-12 surge in the fourth quarter, led by five points from Larriviere and four points from Lafleur.

Abby Miller hit four free throws in the period to finish with 11 points, while LaFleur had nine points.

Gabby Fontenot hit a trey to finish with 10 points.

Poche had six points for the Lady Trojans to finish with 12 points.

Erin Fontenot added a bucket to finish with 16 points.
