Manuel said he is excited to see the Blue Jay talent hit the field.
“We have a lot of juniors and sophomores with only one senior (Phillip Fontenot),” the coach said. “What I see I like.”
The Blue Jays open the regular season at home 6 p.m. Tuesday against Iowa.
St. Edmund finished 14-14 overall and a 7-2 second place finish in District 5-1A, falling to No. 3 Covenant Christian in the opening round of the Division IV playoffs.
The Jays move to a new district this season after several years of compettion against Manuel’s former school Westminster Christian Academy.
Manuel said the District 4-1A battle will be challenging including battles with Grand Lake (10-2) and Oberlin (9-3 in district) and Merryville (9-3 in dstrict).
Hamilton Christian and South Cameron (3-9) also play baseball in the district.
For Eunice High, head coach Scott Phillips said the opening weekend is always fun.
“Everyone is ready to be outdoors,” the coach said. “We hope the weather is nice for the games.
“We are tired of being cold and wet.”
Phillips said the jamboree is a scrimmage for his team as they prepare for the season.
“We just want to get a little work in,” he said. “We are still trying to figure out a few guys.
“We have a junior-senior laden bunch,” Phillips said. “We have kids with a lot of experience –guys who earned all-district honors last season.”
Eunice opens the regular season 5:30 p.m. Monday at home against David Thibodeaux High and then will entertain Jennings at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
