ELTON – The game was scoreless after the first quarter and the Blue Jays led 14-0 at the break before St. Edmund exploded for a 42-0 win over Elton.
“That was good win for us,” St. Edmund said. “We just wore them out in the second half.
“We made some mistakes early on offense but the defense made the stops.”
It was the fourth straight shut out for the Blue Jay defense.
St. Edmund (5-1, 3-0) takes on Oberlin in a District 4-1A showdown Friday at Blue Jay Field.
The Tigers (6-0, 3-0) rolled past Hamilton Christian, 32-8.
The road game began slow for the St. Edmund offense as the Jays were stopped on fourth down on its first possession and fumbled the ball at midfield on its second drive.
Interceptions by Hayden Smith and Brad Miller helped the Blue Jay defense.
Miller’s 26-yard pick-off return moved the ball to the Indian 24.
Strong runs by Luke Trahan and Brock Bieber moved the ball to the Elton 1 where Miller scored with 10:05 left in the second period.
After forcing an Elton punt, the Jays gave the ball back on a fumble at the Indian 26.
The St. Edmund defense stiffened and forced a fourth-down incomplete pass to stop the drive at the Blue Jay 21.
It took just six plays to move 79 yards, aided by good runs from Brad Miller, Bieber and Jack Miller.
Beiber capped the drive with a 16-yard touchdown run. Brad Miller’s two-point conversion increased the Jays’ lead to 14-0 with 2:24 left before half time.
Jack Miller’s impressive kick return to open the second half started the Jays’ drive at the Elton 29.
Seven plays later, Brad Miller scored on a 1-yard plunge. Peyton Marcantel’s PAT gave the Jays a 21-0 advantage with 8:53 left in the third frame.
The St. Edmund defense again stopped Elton on fourth down but Blue Jay fumble halted the drive.
Two plays later, Carter Lejeune intercepted an Elton pass and returned it to the Indians’ 37.
Four plays later, Brad Miller scored on a 27-yard run.
The PAT failed, but the Jays led 27-0 with 28 seconds left in the third period.
Elton was forced to a third-and-20 on back-to-back tackles for loss.
On third down, Indian quarterback Camden Harrell was stripped of the ball and St. Edmund’s Ian Dupre scooped up the loose ball and raced 16 yards for the touchdown.
The PAT failed, but the Jays led 33-0 with 11:05 remaining in the game.
After an Elton punt and a strong return by Kaden Fontenot, the Jays were in scoring position at the Indians’ 35.
Six straight running plays was capped by a 3-yard run by Clay Miller.
Marcantel’s kick increased the Jays’ lead to 40-0 with 6:08 left in the contest.
After a final Elton punt, it took the Jays just three plays to score as Luke Vidrine raced 63-yards untouched to the end zone.
Josh Landry’s kick pushed the Jays up, 47-0 with 1:39 remaining.
St. Edmund finished with 50 rushes for 356 yards, while holding Elton (2-4, 2-1) to 62 yards of total offense on 50 plays.
