Jays soar past Hornets, 67-0

GRAND LAKE – St. Edmund exploded for 47 first half points as the Blue Jays soared to a 67-0 road win over Grand Lake.
It was the second highest scoring win for St. Edmund as the Jays cruised to a 68-6 victory over Amy Bradford Ware in 1992.
It took St. Edmund four plays to score the game’s first points, set up by a long kick off return by Cater Lejeune.
The Jays moved the final 25 yards, aided by a 28-yard pass from Jack Miller to Josh Landry.
Jack Miller scored on a 1-yard run to give the Jays a 6-0 lead with 10:28 left in the first period.
After a Hornet punt, it took St. Ed’s four plays to move 69 yards with strong runs by Jack Miller and Brock Bieber.
Miller scored his second touchdown of the quarter on a 1-yard run and Peyton Marcantel’s PAT pushed the Jays ahead, 13-0 with 7:29 left in the quarter.
Grand Lake was forced to punt again and the Jays offense moved 79 yards in five plays, including four straight runs by Brad Miller.
Lejeune capped the drive with a 4-yard run as the Jays increased the margin to 19-0 with 3:30 remaining in the opening period.
On the third play of the ensuing Grand Lake possession, Bieber recovered a fumbled snap at the Hornet 37.
Aided by runs from Brad Miller, Marcantel and Luke Trahan, the Jays moved to the Grand Lake 3.
On the first play of the second period, Miller scored and Marcantel’s kick gave the Jays a 26-0 advantage.
Grand Lake recorded a first down but was later forced to punt and Jays began a 56-yard drive that took just five plays.
Marcantel broke loose for a 42-yard run and then scored from 3-yard out.
Josh Landry’s PAT increased St. Ed’s lead to 33-0 with 6:44 left in the half.
On the first play of the Hornets’ next posssession, Nick Fontenot picked off a Jaren Sonnier pass to give the Jays the ball at the Grand Lake 45.
Two plays later, Jack Miller raced 33 yards for the score. Marcantel’s kick gave St. Ed’s a 40-0 lead with 6:02 left in the second period.
After the Blue Jay defense forced another punt, Brad Miller broke several tackles on the second play and rumbled 72-yards for the touchdown.
Marcantel’s PAT increased St. Ed’s lead to 47-0 with 2:23 remaining before intermission.
After three plays to open the third quarter, the Hornets were forced to punt and Lejeune blocked the punt to give the Jays great field position.
On the very next play, quarterback Clay Miller broke loose for a 25-yard touchdown.
The PAT failed, but the Jays led 53-0 with 10:27 left in the third frame.
Trahan recovered a Hornet fumble on the kickoff and the Jays took over at the Grand Lake 24.
Four plays later, Trahan scored on a 5-yard run.
Landry’s kick increased the Jays’ margin to 60-0 with 7:40 remaining in the third quarter.
The St. Edmund defense accounted for the game’s final points as Trahan raced 40 yards untouched on an interception return.
Landry’s PAT gave the Jays a 67-0 lead with 2:52 left in the third period.
The Hornets attempted two drives in the fourth quarter, but a fumble recovery by Wesley Drigss and a stop at the Jay 5 as time expired preserved the shut out.
St. Edmund outgained Grand Lake, 452 to 163 yards of total offense.
Brad Miller finished with 184 yards on 10 carries, while Jack Miller added 93 yards on five carries.
St. Edmund (7-1, 4-0) entertains Hamilton Christian (1-7, 1-4) Friday.
The Warriors lost 34-0 to Merryville.
