Jays soar past Mamou, 55-18

The Blue Jays improved to 2-1 on the season as St. Edmund cruised to a 55-18 win over Mamou.
“This a good win for us,” St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder said. “We corrected a lot of mistakes and eliminated alot of pentalties from before.
“Hopefully this helps build some confidence heading into district,” Hargroder said. “We just need to do what we do better.”
The Blue Jays took the opening kickoff and went 65 yards in 10 plays for the game’s first points.
Luke Doucet ran the ball six times in the drive, but Brad Miller ran the final seven yards to the end zone.
Peyton Marcantel’s PAT gave the Jays a 7-0 lead with 7:27 left in the first period.
After the defenses controlled the rest of the quarter, the Blue Jays opened the second period with a 15-play, 69 yard drive to begin the quarter’s scoring barrage.
Marcantel capped the drive with a 13-yard touchdown catch from Brad Miller. His PAT pushed the Jays up 14-0 with 5:01 left in the quarter.
A bad snap over the Mamou punter’s head gave St. Edmund the ball at the Green Demon 2 and the next play Doucet scored.
Marcantel’s kick increased the Blue Jays lead to 21-0 with 3:04 left before intermission.
On fourth down, Mamou quarterback Daylon Ardoin was picked off by Brad Miller who raced 51 yards to the Mamou 34.
On the very next play, Doucet broke through the middle of the Green Demon defense for a 34-yard touchdown run.
Marcantel’s PAT increased the Jays’ margin to 28-0 with 1:14 remaining.
The Green Demons responded with a 72-yard scoring pitch and catch from Ardoin to Thomas Atkins.
The two-point conversion attempt failed, but Mamou closed the margin to 28-6 with 52 seconds left in the half.
After a quib kick gave St. Ed’s the ball at their own 42, Brad Miller connected with a wide open Marcantel for a 59-yard touchdown on a scoring play that took just 10 seconds.
Marcantel then kicked the PAT to give the Jays a 35-6 advantage at the break.
The Green Demons fumbled the ball on the second play of the third period and the Jays’ recovered the ball at the Mamou 36.
After three runs by Doucet, Jack Miller scored from 1-yard out. The kick failed, but the Jays led 41-6 with 9:06 left in the third frame.
Mamou took advantage of a fumbled punt and a personal foul penalty to keep their drive alive.
On fourth down, Ardoin found Nakrien Jack open in the end zone for the 17-yard touchdown.
The two-point conversion pass attempt failed, but the Demons closed the gap to 41-12 with 3:56 remaining in the third period.
The ensuing kickoff went just one yard on a missed kick and the Jays quickly moved into scoring position on a 38-yard run by Doucet.
Brad Miller scored his fourth touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run and Marcantel’s kick gave St. Edmund a 48-12 with 3:21 left in the third quarter.
The Green Demons moved into Blue Jay territory on the next possession before St. Ed’s Hayden Smith snared an interception at the Blue Jay 11.
St. Edmund then mounted a 10-play drive aided by a fourth-down fake punt run to move the ball near midfield.
Jack Miller and Noah Clause had back-to-back long runs before Luke Trahan scored on a 4-yard run. Marcantel’s PAT increased the Jays’ lead to 55-12 with 6:36 left in the game.
Mamou had an apparent JaQualyon Arvie long touchdown run called back on a holding penalty, but the Green Demons moved 67 yards in nine plays capped by a 8-yard touchdown run by Jaylen Griffin with 34 seconds left in the game.
The kick was blocked and St. Edmund closed the game with a 55-18 advantage.
The Blue Jays open Disrict 4-1A play at home against rival Basile, while Mamou entertains Port Barre in the District 5-3A opener.
