This week’s clash between the undefeated Tigers and one-loss Blue Jays could determine the District 4-1A title as Oberlin visits St. Edmund.
“We are getting better each week and finally starting to click on offense and find ways to get the yards,” St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder said.
Oberlin (6-0, 3-0) opened the season with non-district wins over Mamou, Delcambre and Oakdale.
The Tigers have earned district victories over Merryville (35-14), Grand Lake (22-3) and Hamilton Christian (32-8).
A look at the standings show those three teams have a combined 2-16 record.
The Tigers and Warriors were tied 8-0 as the game moved to the fourth quarter before Oberlin exploded for 24 points to seal the win over Hamilton Christian.
OHS was led on the ground by Trevor Rider (9-218) who scored on runs of 78- and 79-yards.
Collin Chatman (10-105) added a 41-yard touchdown.
Levi Peloquin connected for a 18-yard touchdown with Chatman and the OHS quarterback also scored on a 3-yard run to seal the win.
The Tigers also scored on a 51-yard interception return.
“They run the Wing-T but they can still throw the ball,” the coach said.
St. Edmund (5-1, 3-0) has outscored its opponents 167-22 including four straight shut out wins.
“We don’t really talk about the shutouts,” Hargroder said. “We just don’t want to give up big plays.
“We haven’t given up a rushing touchdown all year.”
The Blue Jay defense has limited teams to 41.3 yards rushing and 120 yards total offense per game.
“Experience has helped on defense,” Hargroder said. “We aren’t changing anything and the coaches on the defensive side of the ball are very good at what they do.”
On offense, St. Edmund has rolled up 1,648 yards on the ground – led by quarterback Brad Miller (95-520, 10 TDs) along with running backs Jack Miller (21-316, 3 TDs) and Brock Bieber (47-275, 3 TDs).
In last week’s 47-0 win over Elton, the Blue Jays outgained the Indians 356 to 62 yards of total offense.
