Lady Cats, Bobcats fall in tourney

OPELOUSAS – The No. 2 seed Eunice Lady Bobcats went 0-2 in the St. Landry Parish basketball tournament held this past weekend at Opelousas High.
In the opener, Northwest exploded for a 31-10 first quarter run as the Lady Raiders cruised to 82-14 win.
With a bucket by Jesslyn Reed and another by Stacie White, the Lady Cats closed the gap to 15-4 midway through the quarter.
White hit a jumper to pull Eunice closer, 22-6.
White later converted a three-point play with 1:43 remaining as Lady Cats closed the margin to 24-10.
Jelissa Dutley and Khali Malone both scored 10 points, while Katlyn Manuel pushed in eight points for Northwest in the quarter.
The Lady Raiders continued their offensive assault with a 19-4 second quarter surge to move ahead, 50-14 at the break.
Sydni Lemelle hit a jumper to open the frame for the Lady Cats, but Northwest responded with a 17-0 run.
Mary Leday’s eight points helped lead the way for the Lady Raiders.
J’Lisa Thibeaux drove the lane in the closing minute of the half for the Lady Cats.
Jada Thomas answered for Northwest with a bucket with two seconds left.
Even with a 36-point lead, the Lady Raiders continued to push, outscoring Eunice 16-0 in the third quarter.
Malone had seven points in the period, while Mary Leday added four points.
A 15-0 run in the fourth quarter finished the Lady Raider romp.
Leday and Makalyn Savoy both scored four points to lead Northwest in the period.
The Lady Raiders had four player score in double figures including Malone (19), Manuel (14), Savoy (13) and Dutley (12).
White led Eunice with eight points.

NCHS 64, Eunice 54
In the battle for third place in the parish tournament, North Central used a strong second half as the No. 1 seed Lady Hurricanes earned a 64-54 win over the Lady Cats.
The two teams fought for the upperhand in the first quarter, as the Lady Canes held a slim 14-13 advantage.
White led EHS with five points, while Leah Walker added four points and Shaniya Toussaint chipped in three points in the period.
Eunice won the second frame 22-20 to take a 35-34 lead into the locker room.
White had nine points including her second three-pointer of the contest.
Jesslyn Reed contributed seven points, while Toussaint again chipped in three points in the quarter.
Diamond Nevills exploded for 10 points for the Lady Canes, while Frendreka Keller added nine points in the period.
North Central went on an 18-7 run in the third period as the Lady Canes began to pull away.
Keller led the Lady Canes with eight points in the quarter, while Toussaint pushed in five points for the Lady Cats.
Eunice battled to keep the game close, outscoring North Central 12-11 in the final period.
Toussaint added four points in the quarter to finish with 16 points,
White chipped in three points to close with 19 points.
North Central’s Keller scored seven points in the quarter to finish with 29 points.
Nevills psuhed in three free throws in the period to close with 19 points.

Northwest 83, Eunice 58
After falling 46-42 in overtime to Port Barre, the Bobcats were pushed from the parish tournament after a 83-58 loss to Northwest.
The Raiders outscored Eunice 18-9 in the first quarter.
The two offenses sored in the second period as Northwest scored 30 more points and the Bobcats pushed in 26 points.
The Raiders took a 48-35 advantage into the locker room, but Eunice responded with 21-14 surge in the third frame to close the gap to 62-56.
Northwest exploded for a 21-2 run in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Mykal Moore finished with 17points to lead the Bobcats, while David Hampton added 13 points.
Northwest’s Mekhi Hammond led all scorers with 23 points. Three other Raiders finished in double figures including Montaze Sam (16), Keshaw Lazard (15) and Kylan Guidry (14).
Northwest earned a 54-42 win over Opelousas High as Lady Raiders won their third straight parish title.
North Central downed Opelousas 67-54 as the Hurricanes won the boys championship for the first time in seven years.
