Lady Cats slip past Kaplan

The Eunice High Lady Bobcats improved their record to 5-1 with a 43-41 victory over the Lady Pirates of Kaplan High School in basketball action Tuesday night at the Bobcat gym.
Coach Wayne Fontenot’s Lady Cats took an early 5-0 lead over Kaplan as Stacie White nailed a jumper and three-point goal to open the first quarter.
The Lady Pirates quickly cut the lead to 5-4 and took the lead with driving layup that put Kaplan on top by a 6-5 margin, but another three-point basket from White tied the game at 8-8.
A free throw by White gave the Lady Bobcats a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Bobcats quickly expanded their lead to 12-8 when Shania Malveaux hit a 3-point goal on the first shot of the second quarter.
After a Kaplan basket cut the lead to 12-10, Malveaux hit a basket from the corner to expand the Eunice lead to 14-10.
The Lady Bobcats pulled away from the Lady Pirates late in the second quarter as White finished two drives to the goal and Jesslyn Reed hit two free throws and Shaynia Toussaint added one of her own to end the quarter with the Lady Cats holding a 19-14 lead at halftime.
The third quarter began with the Lady Cats extending their lead to 23-14 on a driving goal by Reed and two free throws by White.
Kaplan bounced back with a couple of field goals of their own to move within nine points at 25-18 with 4:21 left in the third quarter.
Toussaint hit a shot from behind the 3-point line to increase the Eunice lead to 28-18 and the Lady Cats extended their lead to 30-18 with two free throws by Malveaux . Kaplan closed the scoring gap to 33-21 as the third quarter came to an end.
The Lady Pirates continued to close the gap to 33-25 with two field goals, but White added two free throws to give the Lady Cats a 37-25 lead with 5:58 left in the game. The Kaplan girls kept the pressure on the Lady Cats, chipping away at the Eunice lead down to 38-37 with 1:41 left in the fourth quarter. Kaplan used a steal to take a 39-38 lead which they increased to 41-40 with time running down. But Lady would take advantage of a Kaplan turnover to gain possession of the ball, and White would hit a 3-point goal to give the Lady Cats a 43-41 victory.
White finished the game with 27 points to lead the Eunice scoring. Malveaux and Toussaint added seven and five points, respectively for the Lady Cats. Reed chipped in with four points.
