Lady Dogs roll in playoff win

IOTA – The No. 10 Iota Lady Bulldogs opened the Class 3-A state softball playoffs with a 14-4 win over No. 23 Iowa.
Iota (23-9) will take on the Kaplan in the regional round.
No. 7 Kaplan (21-7) rolled to a 16-1 win over No. 26 Jennings in the bi-district round.
Iowa (13-19) scored first as Ana Alexander singled and scored on a hit by Ashanti Carter.
The Lady Bulldogs responded with eight runs in the bottom of the first inning Makenzie Droddy reached on an error, while Teri Johnson and Payton DuBose both walked to load the bases.
Ryley Crochet then walked to plate Droddy before Greta Fontenot doubled in Johnson and DuBose.
Dixie Guidry drove in Crochet, while McKenzy LeJeune singled in Fontenot.
Taylor Dupre walked and Droddy homered on her second at-bat of the inning to increase Iota’s lead to 8-1.
Iowa scored a run in the top of the second to close the margin to 8-2 as Kamryn Howard doubled and pinch runner Makatlynn Atlow scored on a ground out by Bentley Richard.
Iota answered with two runs in the bottom of the third frame, begun when Dupre reached on an error and scored on a hit by Crochet.
Droddy was intentionally walked and later scored on a single by Fontenot as the Lady Bulldogs moved ahead, 10-2.
Iowa scored a run in the fourth when Carter doubled and crossed home plate on a ground out by Tori Nunez.
The Lady Yellowjackets closed the gap to 10-4 in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Lesley LeBleu.
Iota put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, begun when Amelie Armand walked and scored as Johnson reached on a fielder’s choice.
Droddy walked for the third time in the game and Dubose’s doubled drove in two runs.
The Lady Dogs completed the mercy-rule win as Crochet singled in Johnson for the 14-4 advantage.
Fontenot earned the complete-game win as she allowed four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Guidry went 4-for-4 with a RBI to lead Iota, while Crochet (2-for-4, BB, 3 RBI, RS), Dupre (2-for-3, BB, 3 RS) and Fontenot (2-for-3, BB, 3 RBI, RS) also got multiple hits for the Lady Dogs.
Carter went 2-for-3 with a RBI for Iowa, while Howard also went 2-for-3.
