Lady Jays down Basile in District 4-1A opener

In a game highlighted by streaks, St. Edmund earned a 58-36 win over Basile in the District 4-1A opener.
The Lady Jays (4-9, 1-0) jumped out to a 6-2 lead, sparked by buckets from Maggie Larriviere, Savannah DeVillier and Gabby Fontenot.
The Lady Bearcats (4-12, 0-1) finished the opening quarter with a 7-0 run, including back-to-back lay-ups by Kathryn Giles as Basile took a 9-6 lead in the second period.
Gracie Fournet scored twice to help the Lady Cats finish the 12-0 run to push ahead, 14-6.
The Lady Jays responded a 14-0 run, begun with a pair of buckets by Fontenot and two free throws by Abby Miller to close the gap to 14-12 with 2:08 left.
Larriviere nailed a jumper to tie the game and then Fontenot drilled back-to-back treys to give the Lady Jays a 20-14 advantage.
Basile’s Giles scored on an inbounds play to slow the surge, but St. Ed’s Kinsley Marcantel scored off a steal at the buzzer to give the Lady Jays a 22-16 lead at the break.
Giles hit a three-pointer early in the third period, but Larriviere helped SEH with a pair of jumpers to push the Lady Jays up, 26-19.
Miller later completed a three-point play, followed by buckets from Larriviere and Marcantel.
Miller’s jumper with 2:54 remaining finished the Lady Jays’ 13-1 run as St. Edmund moved ahead, 35-20.
Lainey Soileau scored in the lane for Basile, but Fontenot made a lay-up and Miller later added a free throw to push SEH ahead, 38-22.
Giles scored late on a lay-up and Caitlyn Deshotels hit a trey trop open the final period to help Basile close the margin to 38-27.
St. Edmund answered with a 12-2 run, sparked by back-to-back drives in the lane by Miller.
After a shot by Deshotels for the Lady Cats, Fontenot and Marcantel both pushed in four points as St. Edmund took control of the game.
Basile battled back with a jumper from Fournet and a trey by Soileau sandwiched around a jumper by Lady Jay’s Fontenot.
St. Edmund sealed the win with a put-back by Marcantel and a inbounds shot from Fontenot to push the Lady Jays ahead by 24 points.
Giles (13 points) hit two free throws with one second left to close the final margin to 58-36.
Fontenot led St. Edmund with 22 points, including two treys,
Miller chipped in 12 points, while Marcantel and Larriviere added 10 points each.
After traveling to South Cameron Friday, the Lady Jays will entertain Elton on Wednesday as district action continues.
