Lady Jays, EHS begin seasons with wins

The Lady Jays opened the softball season with wins over Crowley and Ville Platte.
In St. Edmund’s 11-0 win over Crowley, pitchers Karleigh Soileau and Kennedy Ardoin combined for a no-hit shutout.
Soileau pitched four innings with nine strikeouts and Ardoin closed the mercy-rule win with two strikeouts and a walk in the fifth inning.
The Blue Jays scored in the first inning when Ellie Manuel reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a triple by Ardoin.
St. Edmund exploded for 10 runs in the third inning and the defense then sealed the win for the Lady Jays.
Soileau singled to start the inning and Manuel reached on a bunt before Jenna Smith drilled a two-RBI triple to left field to push the Lady Jays ahead, 3-0.
Ardoin doubled in Smith, Jacey Cobb reached on an error and Ashlyn Marcantel was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Sarah Duplechain’s sacrifice fly allowed Ardoin to score and Elizabeth McGee’s sacrifice plated Cobb before Caroline Trahan’s double pushed across Marcantel to extend the Lady Jays’ lead to 8-0.
Soileau drew a two-out walk, Manuel reached on an error and Smith followed with an inside-the-park grand slam home run on a liner to left field as the Jays forged ahead, 11-0.
Smith went 2-for-3 with six RBI to lead the Lady Jay offense, while Manuel went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Ardoin went 2-for-2 and a hit pitch with two RBI and a run scored against Crowley.

St. Ed’s 9, VPHS 5
VILLE PLATTE – St. Edmund improved to 2-0 on the year with a 9-5 win over Ville Platte.
Karleigh Soileau and Manuel both walked to begin the game and Smith blasted a two RBI triple.
Smith scored on a ground out by Cobb to push the Lady Jays ahead, 3-0.
St. Ed’s added a run in the top of the second when McGee walked and later stole home.
The Lady Jay moved ahead 5-0 in the top of the third when Ardoin reached on an error and scored on a ground out by Marcantel.
Ville Platte scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Alyssa Soileau singled and stole home.
St. Ed’s answered in the fifth frame when Smith reached on an error and scored on a double by Ardoin.
Ville Platte closed the gap to 7-3 in the bottom of the inning, but the Lady Jays responded in the sixth when Caroline Trahan singled and crossed home plate on a sacrifice by Smith.
The Lady Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to pull closer, 8-4.
St. Ed’s added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Cobb singled and later scored when McGee walked with the bases loaded.
Ville Platte’s fifth run came on an inside the park home run by Alyssa Soileau.
Lady Jay pitcher Karleigh Soileau struck out 17 batters and allowed five runs on nine hits.

Eunice 16, FRA 6
Eunice High head softball coach Trenon Troslair grabbed his first career win as the Lady Cats cruised to a 16-6 win over False River Academy.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first, begun when Alexis Oretgo reached on a error and Olivia Thibodeaux walked.
Ortego scored on an error, while Alissa Pate and McKenzie Guillory both walked to keep the inning going.
Jailyn Pavich doubled in Thibodeaux and Guillory to push the Lady Cats ahead, 3-0 and Pate later scored on a passed ball.
Eunice added three more runs in the bottom of the second begun when Sydni Lemelle walked and scored on another passed ball.
Ortego singled and scored on a single by Gabby Mitchell as the Lady Cats moved ahead, 6-0.
Vidrine reached on a dropped third strike and later scored on a sacrifice by Guillory.
False River scored twice in the top of the third, but Eunice responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Pavich, Caroline Vienne and Vidrine all walked to load the bases.
Ortego singled in Pavich before courtesy runner Mallory O’Brien and Lemelle both scored on a FRA error. Ortego scored on a ground out by Thibodeaux to push the Lady Cats up 11-2.
Eunice exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth frame to give the Lady Cats a comfortable 16-2 advantage.
Pavich began the rally with a double and pinch runner Harmony Jason scored on another double by Vienne.
Lemelle singled and Ortego followed with a double to push across courtesy runner O’Brien and Lemelle for a 14-2 lead.
Ortego scored on a ground out by Mitchell, while Vidrine walked and later scored on a single by Raegan Fontenot.
False River rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth before the Lady Cat defense stiffened to preserve the mercy-rule win.
Ortego went 3-for-4 with five RBI and four runs scored to lead the EHS offense.
Pavich finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.
Vienne earned the win as she struck out three and allowed three earned runs on six hits over five innings.

Port Barre 13, Eunice 6
Eunice High jumped to a 6-2 lead in the Lady Bobcats’ season opener, but Port Barre exploded for seven runs in the fifth and added four more in the seventh inning as the Lady Devils rallied for the 13-6 win.
Port Barre scored two runs in the top of the second inning, begun when Blair Young walked and courtesy runner Reagan Martinez later advanced on an EHS error.
Malani Francis reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to third base on a double by Grace Chelette and stole home to push the Lady Devils ahead, 2-0.
The Lady Cats battled back in the bottom of the third when Lemelle singled and scored on a triple by Ortego.
Vidrine followed with a triple as Ortego scored and Mitchell doubled in Vidrine to give the Lady Cats a 3-2 advantage.
Eunice added three more runs in the fourth, begun when Pate doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carli Boone.
Pavich singled and courtesy runner O’Brien scored on Lemelle’s single to center.
Lemelle crossed home plate on a ground-out by Vidrine as the Lady Cats pushed ahead, 6-2.
Port Barre’s fifth inning surge was aided by several EHS errors, three walks and two-RBI double by Samantha Daniels as the Lady Devils took a 9-6 lead.
Port Barre sealed the win with four runs in the top of the seventh inning, again aided by a Eunice error, a walk, a hit batter and another double by Daniels (2-for-5, 3 RBIs, 2 runs scored).
Lemelle led the Lady Cats with a 3-for-3 performance as she added a RBI and two runs scored.
Ortego and Vidrine both finished 2-for-4 with a RBI, while Pavich went 2-for-2.

Jennings 4, Eunice 0
JENNINGS – The Bobcats opened the baseball season with a 4-0 loss to Jennings as the Bulldogs limited Eunice to just three hits in the shutout loss.
The Bobcats threatened early as Zach Suire and Dylan Darbonne walked and Hayden Darbonne was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the first inning, but Eunice could not push a run across.
The game was scoreless until Jennings exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fifth as the Bulldogs sealed the win.
Connor Cassidy walked, Lane Kratzer and Seth Benoit both singled to load the bases before Ethan Mack doubled in two runs.
Kolby singled in Benoit and Will Monicc’s hit scored Mack before the Bobcat defense stopped the rally.
Ian Mullen earned the complete game win as he struck out 16, walked four and allowed only a hit by Dylan Guillory.
Bobcat starter Price Myers took the loss as he went 4.1 innings as he struck out eight, walked one and allowed one run on two hits.

Eunice 6, DeQuincy 0
Eunice pitcher Jahiem Mitchell limited DeQuincy to three hits in a complete-game performance as the Bobcats earned 6-0 shutout over the Tigers in the Westlake tournament.
The Bobcats scored two runs in the bottom of the first, begun when lead-off Mitchell was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Dylan Darbonne.
Zach Suire singled and later stole home to give the Cats a 2-0 advantage.
Eunice added a run in the third inning when Evan Fruge singled and scored on a triple by Mitchell.
The Bobcats moved ahead 4-0 in the fourth frame when Hudson Manuel singled and scored on a double by Dylan Darbonne.
EHS added a run in the fifth inning as Myers singled and scored on a double by Manuel.
The Bobcats pushed across an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Mitchell doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Hayden Darbonne.
Mitchell struck out six and walked one over seven innings. He also went 3-for-3 at the plate with a RBI and two runs scored.
Dylan Darbonne went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Manuel finished 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
Eunice entertains Vermilion Catholic on Monday at Bobcat Field.
