Lady Jays fall in playoffs

After a first-round bye, St. Edmund fell 10-0 to Ascension Catholic Wednesday in the LHSAA Division IV softball playoffs.
The Lady Bulldogs (14-11) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, which proved to be enough to preserve the win.
Isabell Abadie and Bailey Acosta singled before Lauren Landry walked to load the bases.
Carson Dunn singled in Abadie, while Acosta and Landry crossed home plate on a hit by Angelle Theriot.
Ascension Catholic added two more runs in the fifth when Abadie belted a home run over the left field wall and Acosta walked and scored on a wild pitch.
The Lady Bulldogs exploded for five insurance runs in the sixth to seal the mercy-rule win.
Alicia Canatella reached on an error, Emmie Medine singled and both scored on a double by Ceily Grisaffe to move ahead 7-0.
Acosta drove in Grisaffe before Landry doubled and they both scored on a Lady Jay throwing error for the 10-run advantage.
St. Edmund (11-15)threatened in every inning, but the Lady Jays could not manufacture any runs.
Gabby Fontenot was hit by a pitch in the first inning, while Olivia McDaniel and Jayden Soileau both walked in the second frame.
Kelli Richard walked, Fontenot reached on a fielder’s choice in the third along with a single by Maggie Larriviere but again no Lady Jays scored.
Abby Miller singled in the fourth but was left stranded when a double play ended the inning.
Richard walked in the fifth but could not advance as the Lady Bulldod defense stiffened.
Lady Jay catcher Kinsley Marcantel (2-for-3) and Miller (2-for-3) both reached base in the bottom of the sixth, but three straight outs ended the game.
