Lady Jays grab 42-40 thriller

GRAND CHENIER – St. Edmund’s Gabby Fontenot hit a driving jumper at the buzzer as the Lady Jays grabbed a 42-40 win over South Cameron.
With the win, the Lady Jays improved to a 2-0 in District 4-1A play, 5-8 overall.
After taking on Elton Wednesday, the Lady Jays travel to Oberlin Friday.
South Cameron opened with a 8-7 lead over St. Edmund, sparked by four points from Hannah Mhire.
Lady Jay Abby Miller scored four points for SEH, while Camille Leger pushed in three points.
Fontenot exploded for 13 points in the second period to help lead the Lady Jays to a 17-10 run and a 24-18 halftime advantage.
Leger and Miller both added two points in the quarter.
Mhire led South Cameron with four points.
The two teams battled for a 9-9 tie in the third quarter as the Lady Jays took a 33-27 lead into the fourth quarter.
Fontenot hit a trey, while Leger, Miller and Savannah DeViller each chipped in a bucket for the Lady Jays.
Mhire led South Cameron with seven points.
The Lady Tarpons rallied for a 13-7 run in the fourth quarter before Fontenot’s winning shot.
Fontenot scored all nine points in the period for SEH and finished with 25 points on the night.
Miller contributed eight points and Leger added seven points.
Karlee Nunez scored 10 points in the period to finish with 12 points for the Lady Tarpons.
Mhire led South Cameron with 14 points, while Allie Hardie chipped in eight points.
