Lady Jays grab district win

MERRYVILLE – The Lady Blue Jays picked up their first district win of the season as St. Edmund grabbed a 5-3 road win over the Merryville Panthers.
St. Edmund (4-2, 1-0) jumped to a 2-0 early lead when Karleigh Soileau walked and then courtesty runner Anne Marie Dubois scored on a home run blast by Kinsley Marcantel.
Merryville (1-3, 0-1) closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning when Alyssa Duncan singled and later scored when Harleigh Ferguson drew a bases loaded walk.
The Lady Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the third when Ferguson reached on an error and courtesy runner Lindsey Townsley scored on a passed ball.
Lady Jay pitcher Karleigh Soileau then halted the rally when she struck out Mackenzie Samuel to end the inning.
St. Ed’s regained the lead in the top of the fifth when Jacee Cobb doubled to left and scored on a hit by Kennedy Ardoin.
The Lady Jays pushed ahead 5-2 with two more runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Jaedyn Soileau singled to right and Karleigh Soileau followed with a hit to left field.
Marcantel walked to load the bases and keep the one-out rally going.
Jaedyn Soileau scored on a passed ball, while Karleigh Soileau crossed home plate on a Merryville error.
The Lady Panthers closed the gap to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh when Riley Dyson reached base and scored on a hit by Kamryn Hudson.
Karleigh Soileau then struck out the next two Merryville batters to end the game.
Soileau earned the complete game win as she struck out 13, walked six and allowed just two earned runs.
Karleigh Soileau went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, while Marcantel finished 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI.
Cobb went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
Ardoin finished 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI, while Anna Belle Fontenot went 1-for-3 with a double.
St. Edmund is scheduled to entertain Sacred Heart of Ville Platte at 4 p.m. Wednesday before travelling to district foe Grand Lake on Thursday.
