Lady Jays grab first victory

  VILLE PLATTE – The St. Edmund Lady Jays earned their first win of the season with a 40-33 win over Basile in the loser’s bracket of the Sacred Heart of Ville’s annual Turkey tournament.

The two teams battled for control early in the contest when Gabby Fontenot scored for the Lady Jays and Basile’s  Jenny Smith answered with a three-pointer.

Reagan Ledeaux then hit two free throws to give the Lady Bearcats a 5-2 advantage before Allison Lafleur nailed a jumper for St. Edmund.

Katheryn Giles hit a lay up for Basile as the Lady Cats pushed ahead, 7-4 with 1:59 left in the first quarter.

Abby Miller scored inside, Lafleur hit a free throw and Camille Leger scored on a put-back bucket as the Lady Jays took a 9-7 lead into the second quarter.

Ledeaux drained a trey to open the second period, but  Miller scored from the baseline to give the Lady Jays a 11-10 advantage.

Back-to-back Basile buckets pushed the Lady Cats ahead, 14-11 with 5:52 left before intermission.

St. Edmund responded with second-chance baskets by Miller and Maggie Larriviere as the Lady Jays retook a 15-14 lead.

Mckayla Adams scored off a steal for Basile, but St. Edmund answered with buckets by Leger and Miller as the Lady Jays held a 19-16 advantage with 3:45 left in the half.

Ledeaux drained her second trey of the period to force a tie. But Lady Jay Miller drove the lane and Larriviere later added a free throw to push St. Edmund ahead 22-19.

Basile closed the half with a 4-0 run including a late jumper by Giles to give the Lady Bearcats a 23-22 lead at the break.

St. Edmund went a 16-5 run in the third period to begin to break the game open, including two buckets by  Lafleur early in the quarter.

Leger added three buckets in the paint to push the Lady Jays ahead, 35-28 as the game advanced to the final quarter.

The defenses took over in the fourth period as the two teams battled to a 5-5 tie and St. Edmund held on for the win.

Lafleur hit two free throws to open the quarter before Basile’s Giles hit a layup and later added a free throw to close the gap to 37-31.

Larriviere hit a free throw and Lafleur scored on a lay-up to push the Lady Jays ahead. 40-31.

Giles added two free throws in the closing seconds to help the Lady Cats close the final margin to 40-33.

Giles finished with 15 points, while Ledeaux chipped in nine points for the Lady Cats.

Leger led St. Edmund with 12 points, while Lafleur added 11 and Miller contributed eight points for the Lady Jays.

St. Edmund travels to Gueydan Tuesday.

Montgomery 51, St,. Edmund 32

VILLE PLATTE – The Tigers jumped out a 16-3 first quarter lead as Montgomery earned a 51-32 win over St. Edmund in the loser’s bracket of the Sacred Heart of Ville’s annual Turkey tournament.

 

Ayden Jackson hit a three-point play and Dervien O’Conn added four straight points as Montgomery began with a 7-0 lead before Austin Gradney drained a trey at the 5:01 mark for the Blue Jays.

Dymycal Turner added three more buckets for the Tigers and a late free throw by Kyland Nash extended Montgomery’s lead to 13 points.

After a bucket by Logan Graves pushed the Tigers ahead, 19-3, the Blue Jays regrouped for a 9-0 run including a trey by Gradney as well a bucket from Carter Andrus and four points by Christian Fontenot.

A Jared Henry three-pointer extended Montgomery’s advantage to 22-12, but St. Edmund’s Alex Dupre hit four straight free throws in the final minute to close the gap to 22-16 at the break.

St. Edmund’s Drake Trahan hit a jumper and Dupre made a free throw early in the third period, but a 14-2 run over the rest of the third period pushed the Tigers’ lead to 36-21.

Buckets by O’Conn, Mason Dean, Kasey Paddie, Shane Thevin and Turner closed Montgomery’s surge as St. Edmund’s Dupre scored in the lane with 20 seconds left in the third frame.

The Blue Jays battled to stay in the game  in the fourth quarter with free throws from Gradney, Andrus and Stephan Thibodeaux, but the Tigers answered with four points by Turner and lay-up from Felvien.

A trey by Dupre and a  bucket underneath from Thibodeaux closed the gap to 44-30 midway through the fourth period, but a late 5-2 Tiger run sealed the Montgomery win.

Turner led the Tigers with 15 points, while Dupre had 10 points for the Blue Jays.

St. Edmund travels to Gueydan Tuesday.
