Lady Jays grab tourney wins

VILLE PLATTE – The Lady Jays outscored the Lady Bearcats 10-6 in overtime as St. Edmund grabbed a 56-52 win over Basile in the second day of Turkey Tournament action.
St. Ed’s Savannah DeVillier hit two free throws early in the overtime period and later scored in the lane to push the Lady Jays ahead, 50-47.
Mary Beth Lafleur’s three pointer increased the Lady Jays’ lead to 53-47 with 1:47 left in the extra period.
Basile responded with a baseline bucket by Kyhlee Fruge and trey from Shayla Lavergne to close the gap to 53-52 with 1:18 remaining on the clock.
Kinsley Marcantel hit a free throw and Lafleur added two more from the charity stripe to give the Lady Jays a four point game-winning advantage.
Basile hit a trey with five seconds left, but a timeout called before the shot erased the points and the Lady Bearcats could not score again before time expired.
St. Edmund (3-0) opened the game with an 11-4 run, sparked by five points from Lafleur.
Basile responded with an 8-0 surge, aided by five points by Lainey Soileau as the Lady Bearcats grabbed a 12-11 lead with 1:10 left in the period.
Marcantel scored on back-to-back buckets in the closing minute to help the Lady Jays take a 15-12 advantage into the second quarter.
The two teams continued to battle in the second period as the Lady Jays took a six-point lead into the locker room.
St. Ed’s went on a 10-2 run to open the second quarter including four points by Lafleur and buckets from Rebecca Benoit and Marcantel.
After Soileau scored on a put-back bucket for Basile, Lafleur drilled a trey and Anna Belle Fontenot scored on a put-back to push the Lady Jays ahead 28-20.
Lavergne and Soileau scored in the lane around a bucket by Fontenot to close the Lady Jays lead to 30-24 at the break.
The two defenses controlled the third quarter as St. Ed’s outscored Basile, 7-5.
Benoit and Marcantel drove the lane for the Lady Jays, while Soileau scored twice for Basile.
St. Edmund’s Tany Miller drained a three pointer with 2:34 left in the period, while Fruge later hit a free throw as the Lady Bearcats closed the gap to 37-29 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
Basile’s Fruge scored in the lane before Julia Zaunbrecher scored inside and Lafleur later added a free throw as the Lady Jays moved ahead, 40-31.
Lavergne again scored underneath for the Lady Bearcats, but Lafleur scorched the nets for another trey for the Lady Jays.
Trailing 43-33 with 6:20 left in regulation, Basile stormed back with a 10-0 run capped by two free throws by Fruge to force a 43-43 tie.
Lafleur hit a free throw and Benoit later scored from the baseline to give the Lady Jays a 46-43 advantage with 2:01 left.
Basile’s Soileau hit a three pointer with 41 seconds remaining to tie the game. St. Ed’s missed a scoring opportunity at the buzzer and the game moved to the overtime period.
Lafleur led St. Edmund with 22 points, while Benoit finished with 10 points and Marcantel chipped in nine points for the Lady Jays.
Soileau led Basile with 18 points, while Fruge followed with 15 points and Lavergne added 11 points.
St. Edmund will entertain Kaplan Tuesday at 6 p.m., while Basile visits Vinton (2-2) on Monday.

St. Ed’s 49, Crowley 43
VILLE PLATTE – After falling behind early, the Lady Jays responded to grab a 49-43 win over Crowley in the Turkey Tournament.
The Ladies opened the game with an 17-8 run, sparked by eight points from Tyzaneka Price and five points by Taylor Perkins.
Mary Beth Lafleur led the Lady Jays in the period with three points and Savannah DeVillier chipped in four points.
St. Edmund rallied for 17-9 second quarter surge to close the halftime gap to 26-25.
Rebecca Benoit scored eight points and Lafleur added five points for the Lady Jays in the second frame.
Crowley’s Myraneika Lastrapes scored seven of the Ladies’ nine points in the period.
St. Edmund grabbed lead with a 12-9 third quarter battle, aided by four points each from Benoit and Kinsley Marcantel.
Perkins pushed in five points in the period for the Ladies.
The Lady Jays sealed the win in the fourth quarter, outscoring Crowley 12-8.
Benoit scored five points in the period to lead St. Ed’s with 18 points.
Lafleur also scored five points in the quarter to finish with 15 points.
Marcantel added a bucket to close with eight points.
Lastrapes led Crowley with 13 points, while Price and Perkins both chipped in 10 points.
