Lady Jays make history

PLAQUEMINE – In only their second season of varsity competition, the Lady Jays earned a berth in the LHSAA Division V volleyball playoffs.
No. 26 St. Edmund traveled to No. 7 St. John on Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles grabbed a 25-8, 25-13, 25-17 win over St. Edmund.
Savannah DeVillier and Anna Belle Fontenot had 22 digs for the Lady Jays.
Ellie Manuel and Devillier each had two kills.
Hannah Benoit had two aces against the Lady Eagles.
“With all the issues surrounding COVID-19 and the uncertainties around if we would even have a season I am pleased that we got chance to play,” St. Edmund head coach Barry Manuel said. “I am thrilled that the girls made the playoffs in our second season.”
Manuel credited his senior group for help building the Lady Jay program.
The 10 seniors included DeVillier, Rebecca Benoit, Hannah Benoit, Anna Belle Fontenot, Sarah Duplechain, Mary Beth Lafleur, Gracie Savoy, Morgan Manuel, Ann Marie Dubois and Chloe Warner.
“They set the foundation for the future,” Manuel said. “They enjoyed the game and playing for each other.
“The seniors started the tradition and now the younger ones behind them have the chance to step up and run with it next year.”
Manuel said the Lady Jays also earned the Sportmanship Award from the Acadiana board of officials.
Four other teams from District 1, Division V also earned playoff spots.
No. 3 Westminster Christian Academy grabbed a 25-9, 25-9, 25-8 sweep over No. 30 Covenant Christian
No. 5 Catholic High of Pointe Coupee will host to No. 28 First Baptist Christian.
No. 12 Northside Christian will entertain No. 21 South Plaquemines.
No. 31 Hamilton Christian will travel to No. 2 Calvary Baptist.
The Academy of the Sacred Heart of Grand Coteau was seeded No. 16 in the power rankings, but will not participate in the volleyball playoffs.
