Lady Jays split wins in tourney

VILLE PLATTE – St. Edmund cruised to a 40-19 win over Westminster Christian Academy Tuesday in the second day of the at the Turkey Tournament at Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.
The Lady Jays (2-1) jumped out to a 12-2 dvantage as Mary Beth Lafleur pushed in 10 points to lead St. Ed’s.
After the Lady Crusaders closed the gap to 14-6 early in the second period, St. Edmund opened up with a 22-6 lead aided by four points from Lafleur and Kinsley Marcantel.
Tanzy Miller hit a jumper with 23 seconds left to lift the Lady Jays’ lead to 24-8 at intermission.
The Lady Crusaders outscored St. Edmund 9-8 in the third period to close the gap to 32-17.
Jill Simpson scored five points for the Lady Jays, while Marcantel added three points.
St. Edmund put the game away with a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter, inluding buckets from Simpson, Anna Belle Fontenot and Greta Miller.
After WCA scored its only bucket in the frame, Miller hit a free throw with 17 seconds left to complete the 40-19 rout.
Lafleur led the Lady Jays with 14 points.
Simpson added eight points and Marcantel chipped in seven points.

Lady Bearcat Ryan Ashford hit two free throws with nine seconds left to lift Basile to a 46-45 win over St. Edmund Monday at the Turkey Tournament.
Basile jumped out to an early 12-7 lead, sparked by five points from Ashford.
Mary Beth Lafleur pushed in seven points and Kinsley Marcantel scored eight points in the first period including a put-back at the buzzer to give St. Edmund a 15-12 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Caitlyn Deshotel pushed in four points to start the second quarter and give the Lady Cats a 16-15 advantage.
The game remained tight as the Lady Jays retook a 19-16 lead on a trey by Jill Simpson, but Basile answered for a 20-19 margin midway through the period.
Marcantel hit two free throws, but Soileau answered with a drive in the lane and a 22-21 Basile lead.
Marcantel drilled a trey to push the Lady Jays up 24-22, but the Lady Cats closed the half with a 4-1 run including a shot in the paint in the closing minute by Soileau to lift Basile to a 26-25 margin at the intermission.
Marcantel pushed in four points early in the third period to help St. Ed’s grab a 29-27 advantage.
Basile responded with a 6-0 run to take a 33-29 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Jays rallied with six free throws by Lafleur along with a fast break lay-up to force a 37-37 tie with 3:43 left in the game.
Tanzy Miller scored off a steal and later added a free throw as St. Edmund moved ahead, 40-38.
After Basile tied the game again, Marcantel hit two free throws and Anna Belle Fontenot nailed a baseline jumper to give the Lady Jays a 44-40 lead with 1:05 left.
Ashford scored twice in the lane to force a 44-44 tie with 27 seconds left.
Lafleur hit a free throw with 20 seconds remaining for a 45-44 Lady Jay lead, but Ashford followed with her game winning free throws.
Marcantel led St. Edmund with 19 points, followed by Lafleur’s 16 points.
Ashford led Basile with 13 points, followed by Soileau’s 10 points.
