Lady Jays win district title

The celebration would have been bigger with a win, but St. Edmund captured its first district softball championship since 2004 Monday on Senior Day.
St. Edmund earned the 2001 district championship over Mamou and then shared the title with Merryville in 2004.
South Cameron (11-11, 5-3) earned 6-5 win over the Lady Jays, sparked by home runs by Shelby Welch and Karlee Nunez.
The Lady Tarpons junped out to a 1-0 lead when Maeleigh Conner walked and scored on a double by Nunez.
The Lady Jays (13-13, 6-2) tied the game in the bottom of the first when Gabby Fontenot singled and scored on a hit by Abby Miller.
South Cameron grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the third when Conner singled, Welch doubled and both scored on a hit by Nunez.
The Lady Tarpons extended its lead with a Conner walked and Nunez ripped a home run in the top of the fifth inning.
The Lady Jays closed the gap to 5-2 in the bottom of the inning when Jaedyn Soileau doubled and scored ona ground-out by Maggie Larriviere.
St. Edmund continued to battle as Olivia Clark singled and scored on a hit by Jamie Fuselier as the Lady Jays pulled closer, 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth frame.
South Cameron’s Welch ripped a solo home run in the top of the seventh for the decisive run of the game.
The Lady Jays fought back in the bottom of the inning when Fontenot singled and Larriviere hit a home run over the centerfield wall, but St.. Edmund could not pull out the win.
The Lady Jays finished with 12 hits, but left eight on base in the loss.
Allie Bonsall earned the complete game win as she allowe five earned runs with a strikeout and two walks.
Clark (2-for-4, RS), Anna Belle Fontenot (2-for-3) and Gabby Fontenot (2-for-4, 2 RS) all had multiple hits for the Lady Jays.
Larriviere suffered the loss as she allowed six earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.
Nunez went 3-for-4 with five RBI with a home run a double to lead the Lady Tarpons.
