Parish basketball tourney starts today

OPELOUSAS – The annual St. Landry Parish basketball tournament tips off today at the Opelousas High gym.
North Central is the top seed on both the boys and girls brackets.
The tournament begins at 3:30 p.m. as the No. 3 Northwest Lady Raiders (3-4) face the No. 6 Port Barre Lady Devils (1-1).
The No. 4 Opelousas Lady Tigers (8-3) then take on the No. 5 Beau Chene Lady Gators (0-8) at 4 p.m.
The No. 5 Eunice Bobcats (1-4) will battle No. 4 Port Barre (2-3) at 5:30 p.m. in the first boys game of the tournament.
No. 2 seed Beau Chene (7-6) will face No 7 J.S. Clark Leadership Academy (7-6) at 7 p.m.
No 3 OHS (4-4) will take on No. 6 Northwest (1-3) at 8:30 p.m. in today’s finale.
Friday’s action begins with the No. 2 seed Eunice Lady Cats (6-3) taking on the Northwest/Port Barre winner at 3:30 p.m.
The top seed North Central Lady Hurricanes (7-3) will face the Opelousas/Beau Chene winner at 5 p.m.
Game 8 puts the OHS/Northwest winner against the Beau Chene/J.S. Clark winner at 6:30 p.m.
The boys action continues at 8 p.m. when top seed North Central (8-3) takes on the Eunice High/Port Barre winner.
After three elimination round games on Saturday, the third place game will be held.
The girls’ third place game will tip off at 2:30 p.m. followed by the boys’ third place game at 4 p.m.
The girls parish championship game is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
The boys championship game will tip off at 7 p.m.
Northwest captured both the boys and girls parish titles last season.
“The kids really want to perform well at the parish tournament,” Eunice head coach Chad Andrepont said.
“Coming of the state championship in football, these guys are motivated to keep winning on the basketball court,” the coach said. “I am excited about this season and seeing what they can accomplish.
“Our seniors are a talented group but they also work hard in everything they do.”

EHS 71, OC 63
OPELOUSAS – Eunice exploded for 25 fourth quarter points as the Bobcats rallied for a 71-63 win at Opelousas Catholic Tuesday.
OC opened up with a 17-14 first quarter lead, sparked by an 11-3 run to begin the game.
Ronal Patin and Donovan Green both scored five points to lead the Vikings in the period.
Mykal Moore scored seven points including a trey to lead the Bobcats.
The battle continued in the second quarter as OC again outscored the Bobcats, 17-14 to take a 34-28 advantage into the locker room.
Green pushed in five points for the Vikings, while Carlin Vigers exploded for 12 points including two three-pointers to lead the Bobcats.
The Eunice comeback began with an 18-16 third period to close the gap to 50-46 as the game moved to the final period.
Keon Coleman led OC with 11 points in the period, while Vigers drained two treys for the Bobcats.
Eunice outscored the Vikings 25-13 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Vigers chipped in eight points, while Moore added six points and Treylon Cooper pushed in four more for the Bobcats.
Coleman scored five points for OC and finished with 20 points.
Green finished with 16 points as the only other Viking to score in double figures.
Vigers led all scorers with 30 points, while Bobcat teammate Moore contributed 17 points and Cooper finished with 11 points.

SEH 40, WCA 26
St. Edmund picked up its second win of the basketball season as the Blue Jays rolled to a 40-26 victory over Westminster Christian Academy.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 13-5 lead, sparked by trio of three pointers and four free throws.
Easton Coleman scored three points for the Jays, while Ian Dupre added a bucket.
The Blue Jays exploded for a 12-0 run in the second period to grab a 17-13 halftime advantage.
Coleman led SEH with six points in the quarter, while Tyler Fonville chipped in four points and Henry Brown added a bucket.
The Blue Jays out-scored WCA 15-8 in the third frame to push ahead, 32-21.
Luke Trahan nailed a three pointer and added a bucket, while Fonville scored four points for the Jays.
Brown, Alex Dupre and Coleman also scored in the quarter for St. Ed’s.
The Blue Jays went on an 8-4 run in the final period to seal the win.
Alex Dupre hit four free throws, Coleman added a bucket and Brown chipped in two free throws.
Coleman led the Jays with 13 points, while Fonville finished with eight points.

East Beauregard 64, St. Ed's 46
DERIDDER – St. Edmund opened with a 16-12 lead, but East Beauregard exploded for 38 second half points as the Lady Trojans earned a 64-46 win over the Lady Jays.
St. Edmund’s Mary Beth Lafleur scored eight points in the first quarter to lead the Lady Jays.
Jill Simpson, Kinsley Marcantel and Rebecca Beniot also added buckets for St. Edmund.
East Beauregard rallied for a 14-5 second quarter run as the Lady Trojans grabbed a 26-21 halftime advantage.
Marcantel drilled a three-pointer and Benoit added a bucket for the Lady Jays.
The two teams battled for control of the game in the third frame as East Beauregard out-scored St. Edmund 17-15.
Simpson led the Lady Jays with seven points in the quarter, while Benoit, Marcantel, Lafleur and Savannah DeVillier all scored two points each.
With a 43-36 lead heading into the final quarter, East Beauregard outscored St. Edmund 21-10 in the fourth period to seal the win.
Maili Bartz led the Lady Trojand with 18 points, while Tori Harris finished with 17 points.
Lafleur hit two treys in the quarter to lead St. Ed’s on the night with 16 points.
Marcantel added 11 points and Simpson chipped in nine points.
