Sacred Heart sweeps Jays in season opener

 Fast starts by both the Lady Trojans and Trojans helped Sacred Heart of Ville Platte earn a season-opening sweep over St. Edmund Thursday night.

The Lady Trojans  jumped out 22-6 first quarter lead and cruised to a 54-20 win over the Lady Jays.

Sacred Heart opened with a 9-0 run sparked by back-to-back jumpers from Andie Landry.

Camille Leger scored in the lane for the first Lady Jay points midway through the first period,

Another 9-0 Lady Trojan run pushed Sacred Heart ahead, 18-2 as Landry drilled a trey and Erin Fontenot added two buckets off turnovers.

Gabby Fontenot scored on a jumper and Leger added put-back bucket as the Lady Jays closed the gap to 20-6 before Erin Fontenot hit a last-second bucket for the Lady Trojans.

Sacred Heart began the second period with another 9-0 surge, sparked by four points from Landry and a trey by Sydney Shiver.

A baseline jumper by Dulcie Miller pushed the Lady Trojans ahead 31-6 before a three-point play from St. Edmund’s Maggie Larrivierre.

Inside points by Miller and Caroline Dupre pushed the Lady Trojans ahead, 35-11 with 3:37 left before intermission.

Free throws by Allison Lafleur, Gabby Fontenot and Abby Miller helped the Lady Jays close the gap to 22 points before a free throw by Shiver pushed SHVP ahead 36-13 at the break.

Sacred Heart put the game out of reach with a 15-5 run in the third period to forge ahead, 51-18.

The Lady Trojans opened with a put-back by Landry and a free throw from Shiver before St. Edmund answered with a pair of free throws by Larriviere.

Two inside shots from Shiver and Catherine Poche and another from derin Fontenot pushed the Lady Trojans ahead, 45-17 with 2:39 left in the period.

After a free throw by Lady Jay Lafleur, Sacred Heart closed the third period on a 6-0 run aided by buckets from Poche, Shiver and Emilyse Bergeron as SHVP took a 51-18 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The two defenses dominated the final period Poche and Lafleur scored  the only buckets for their respective teams in the quarter.

A free throw by Lady Trojan Blaire Lafleur was the only other point in the period as Sacred Heart capped a 34-point win.

Landry led Sacred Heart with 13 points, while Erin Fontenot and Poche each chipped in 10 points.

Lafleur, Larriviere and Leger all scored five points each to lead the Lady Jays.

The two teams will meet again 6:30 p.m. Monday in Sacred Heart’s Turkey Tournament.

 

SHVP 64, St. Ed’s 37

The Sacred Heart Trojans opened the game with a 19-0 run, sparked by two shots from Jeffery Sylvester along with points off steals by Daniel Scully and Trevor Soileau.

A trey by Nick Lejeune in the final second sclosed the Trojan run.

Drake Trahan hit a base-line jumper with 16 seconds left for the only St. Edmund points in the first quarter.

The Blue Jays opened the second period with a jumper by Austin Gradney along with two free throws  and a lay-up from Alex Dupre to close the margin to 22-8.

Sacred Heart responded with a 7-0 run, sparked by  buckets from Scully, Jacques Fontenot and Sylvester.

A last-minute jumper by Carter Andrus helped the Jays close the gap to 29-10 at intermission.

The two offenses exploded in the third period as St. Edmund outscored Sacred Heart, 17-16.

Scully helped the Trojan with five straight points before Grandey drove the lane for the Jays.

A trey by Jacques Fontenot increased Sacred Heart’s lead to 37-12 with 4:55 left in the period.

Two free throws by William Manuel and trey from Dupre helped the Jays pull closer, 39-18 with 2:12 left.

A put-back bucket from Sacred Heart’s Matthew Santora was answered  by  five straight points from Dupre.

Santora and Trahan exchanged buckets before Sacred Heart’s Wyatt Fontenot and Jays’ Adrus swapped points as the Trojans took a 45-27 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Blue Jays opened the final period with treys  from Dupre and Gradney to close the margin to 12 points.

But Sacred Heart responded with a 10-0 run, sparked by six points from Sylvester along with buckets by Jacques Fontenot and Soileau. 

Christian Fontenot hit a jumper with 3:00 left to close the gap to 20 points.

A pair of three pointers by Jacques Fontenot and Santora along with a lay-up by Lejeune increased Sacred Heart’s lead to 64-35.

Dupre hit two free throws in the final seconds for the Jays to finish with  17 points.

Gradney chipped in seven points for the Jays.

Jacques Fontenot led Sacred Heart with 15 points, while Sylvester contributed 12 points and Scully finished with 10 points.

St. Edmund takes on Iota 12:30 p.m. Monday in the SHVP Turkey Tournament, while host Sacred Heart will take on South Cameron at  8 p.m.
