St. Ed’s splits wins with Plainview

The Lady Jays hung tough with fourth-ranked Plainview for three quarters.
But the Lady Hornets out scored St. Edmund 20-8 in the final period to grab a 52-38 win.
The Lady Jays opened strong with a 5-2 first quarter surge, sparked by buckets from Rebecca Benoit and Tanzy Miller.
Three free throws by Savannah DeVillier pushed the Lady Jays ahead, 7-3.
Plainview’s Mackenzie Willis and Lady Jay Mary Beth Lafleur exchanged treys and DeVillier followed with a drive in the lane.
Kinsley Ashworth answered with an inside bucket for the Lady Hornets.
Lafleur and Abigail Pippen swapped free throws as the Lady Jays grabbed a 15-9 first quarter advantage.
Plainview (20-6) rallied for an 11-5 second period run to force a 20-20 tie at intermission.
Ashworth and Pippen both scored in the lane before Kinsley Marcantel hit a free throw for the Lady Jays.
Jordan Thompson then pushed in three buckets, while DeVillier answered with four points to give the Lady Jays a 20-19 advantage.
Ashworth hit a late free throw as Plainview tied the game heading into the locker room.
The battle continued in the third period as the Lady Hornets out scored St. Ed’s, 12-10.
After Plainview pushed ahead 26-22, Lafleur drilled a trey and DeVillier scored on a put-back bucket to give the Lady Jays a 27-26 lead.
Ashworth converted a three-point play for the Lady Hornets, but Lafleur answered with another trey to give SEH a 30-29 advantage.
Jordan Thompson hit a trey with 1:32 left in the period to help Plainview take a 32-20 lead into the final period.
The Lady Jays tied the game twice in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, but Plainview then went on an 11-0 run including a trey by Brooklyn Taylor.
Trailing 45-34, St. Ed’s answered with two inside shots to pull closer, 46-38.
But Thompson scored the game’s final six points to seal the win for the Lady Hornets.
Thompson led all scorers with 17 points, while Ashworth chipped in 15 points.
DeVillier led the Lady Jays with 13 points and Lafleur followed with 12 points.
In the Lady Jays’ 61-26 win over Westminister Christian Academy, Marcantel led with 15 points, while Rebecca Benoit chipped in 12 points.
St. Edmund (8-10) travels to Opelousas Catholic (13-7) Friday night.

SEH 89, Plainview 61
It was a dominant run from start to finish for St. Edmund as the Blue Jays rolled to an 89-61 win over Plainview.
St. Edmund exploded for a 12-2 run to open the game, sparked by back-to-back treys by Alex Dupre.
Blane Perkins slowed the Jays offense with a three-point play, but St. Edmund responded with five points from Kieran Davis and a drive in the lane by Easten Coleman.
The Hornets scored on consecutive buckets, but again the Jays answered with a 6-0 run with buckets by Henry Brown, Coleman and Davis.
Plainview ended the period with a 6-2 run to close the gap to 27-15.
St. Edmund began the second period with a 17-0 run – including six points from Davis and five points by Dupre – as the Jays stormed ahead, 44-15.
Perkins helped the Hornets offense with 10 points in the period as the Hornets closed the gap to 49-29 at the break.
The two teams battled in the third quarter as the Jays outscored Plainview, 26-21.
Perkins pushed in 17 points in the period, while Drake Ray and Clayton Hartzfelt each added three pointer for the Hornets.
Coleman’s inside presence helped the Jays as he scored eight points and added four free throws in the period.
Dupre’s six points, five from Brown and four free throws by Luke Trahan increaed the Jays’ lead to 75-50 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
St. Edmund opened the final period with a 9-2 run, including five points by Trahan to go with buckets by Coleman and Ian Dupre.
After a Plainview bucket, Ian Dupre hit a trey and later added an inside bucket as the Jays pushed ahead, 89-55.
The Hornets closed the game with a 5-0 run including a trey by Taten Perkins.
Blane Perkins led Plainview (5-14) with 35 points.
Five Blue Jays scored in double figures including Coleman (24), Alex Dupre (18), Brown (15) and Trahan (10).
In the Blue Jays’ 60-46 win over Westminster, Coleman led with 22 points, Dupre added 18 points and Brown contributed 11 points.
It was the second straight game where Coleman scored 22 points as he also led the Jays to a 55-47 win over Sacred Heart.
For his efforts, Coleman earned Eunice News Player of the Week honors.
SEH (7-7) travels to Opelousas Catholic (16-3) on Friday.
