St. Ed’s, Trojans share wins

In a clash between rivals, St. Edmund and Sacred Heart of Ville Platte shared District 5-1A wins.
The Lady Jays (11-6, 2-1) used a stingy defense and timely scoring to earn a 38-17 win over Sacred Heart of Ville Platte (3-12, 1-3).
St. Ed’s Mary Beth Lafleur hit consecutive treys to open the game before Sacred Heart’s Kali Shiver pushed in a bucket to close the gap to 6-2 midway through the quarter.
Rebecca Benoit scored in the lane to extend the Lady Jays’ lead to 8-2 before SHVP’s Jodie Landry hit a free throw in the closing minute of the period.
Lady Trojan Carly Cloud began the second period with two free throws but St. Ed’s Savannah DeVillier scored in the lane and Benoit followed with an in bounds bucket to push the Lady Jays ahead, 12-5.
Sacred Heart’s Shiver drilled a trey to close the margin to 12-8 with 3:00 left in the half.
St. Edmund closed the quarter with an 8-0 run, sparked by five points from Benoit and capped off with a trey from Lafleur.
The Lady Jays held a 20-8 lead at intermission and controlled the second half to seal the win.
Anna Belle Fontenot hit a baseline jumper to open the Lady Jays’ third period before Ava Johnson pushed in two free throws.
Benoit in the lane before a trey by SHVP’s Landry closed the margin to 24-13.
St. Ed’s ended the third quarter with a 5-0 run including a put-back by Fontenot and a three-point play by DeVillier.
The Lady Jays went on a 9-4 run in the final period to seal the crucial district win.
DeVillier scored twice in the lane and Lafleur drilled a trey for the Lady Jays.
Cloud and Shiver pushed in buckets for the Lady Trojans in the period.
Benoit added a bucket in the final minute to cap the Lady Jay win and finished with 13 points.
Lafleur chipped in 12 points on four treys, while DeVillier finished with nine points and Fontenot added four points.
Shiver led Sacred Heart with seven points, while Cloud and Landry both contributed four points.
Both teams have four games left in the regular season before the playoff brackets are released on Feb. 15,
The Lady Jays are presently No. 9 in the LHSAA Div. IV power rankings, while SHVP sits at No. 18 with the top 16 teams earning a playoff berth.

SHVP 44, St. Ed’s 38
In the boy’s game, it was a defensive battle as Sacred Heart grabbed a 44-38 win over the Blue Jays.
The Trojans (10-9, 2-0) opened with a 9-4 run and held a 14-9 advantage into the second period.
St. Edmund (12-8, 0-2) forced a 9-9 tie when Eaten Coleman scored on a put-back bucket and Henry Brown drilled a three pointer.
Keega McIntosh hit his second trey of the period and the Trojans added a last second bucket to extend the margin to five points.
Sacred Heart outscored the Blue Jays 9-2 in the second quarter on a trio of long-range shots by Sam Fontenot.
Brown hit a jumper at the 6:17 mark for the only Blue Jay points in the period.
St. Edmund regrouped at the break as the Blue Jays outscored SHVP 12-9 in the third period.
Coleman scored twice early in the quarter to help the Jays close the gap to 25-15.
A trey by Fontenot and a bucket from Spencer Darbonne pushed the Trojans ahead, 30-16.
Luke Trahan drilled a trey and Kieran Davis scored twice in the lane as the Blue Jays battled to close the margin to 32-23 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
Free throws dominated the final period as the Jays out gained Sacred Heart, 15-12.
St. Edmund made 8-of-15 free throws in the fourth quarter, while Sacred Heart hit 9-of-15 in the period.
Five free throws and put-back from Davis helped SEH pull closer, 39-31.
Brown hit two free throws and drilled a trey while Davis scored a bucket at the buzzer, but the Trojans were able to earn the 44-38 road win.
Davis finished with 16 points to lead the Jays, while Brown chipped in 10 points and Coleman added seven points.
Fontenot scored 16 points to spark the Trojans, while McIntosh contributed 11 points.
St. Edmund travels to Westminster Christian Academy on Tuesday, while Sacred Heart entertains Opelousas Catholic.
