St. Edmund splits with South Camerom

In a game dominated by defense, it all came down to free throws as St Edmund earned a 34-31 win over South Cameron.
Trailing 30-29 with less than two minutes remaining, the Lady Jays pushed in five free throws to seal the victory.
Gabby Fontenot hit two from the charity stripe to help St. Edmund move ahead for the first time since the opening quarter.
Kinsley Marcantel added a free throw with 25 seconds left before Savannah DeVillier nailed two more in the closing seconds to seal the Lady Jay win.
St. Edmund (8-13 overall, 5-4 in District 4-1A) travels to Elton (14-7, 5-3) Friday night as district action continues.
The Lady Jays opened the game with a 7-3 lead, sparked by three points by Miller.
Nunez scored all eight points in the period for the Lady Tarpons including at trey to give South Cameron an 8-7 advantage.
Marcantel drilled a trey 17 seconds later to lift the Lady Jays to a 10-8 lead late in the first period.
South Cameron surged for a 10-1 run in the second period, aided by six points from Marley Thibodeaux as the Lady Tarpons held an 18-11 lead at the break.
Camille Leger hit a free throw at the 4:14 mark for the only Lady Jay point in the period.
St. Edmund regrouped after intermission as the Lady Jays responded with a 10-4 third period rally.
A put-back bucket by DeVillier, a trey from Marcantel and an inside shot by Miller forced an 18-18 tie midway through the quarter.
South Cameron answered to retake a 22-18 lead before a three-point play from Miller closed the gap to 22-21 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
Miller scored back-to-back buckets early in the fourth quarter to push the Lady Jays ahead, 25-22.
After two Lady Tarpon free throws, Fontenot and Marcantel scored to help St. Edmund increase the margin to 29-24.
South Cameron (5-13. 3-5) went on a 6-0 run, including four free throws, to grab a 30-29 lead with 1:15 left in the game.
Marcantel led the Lady Jays with 13 points, Miller chipped in 12 points, while Fontenot and DeViller added four points each.
Nunez led South Cameron with 11 points.

South Cameron Tarpons jumped out to a 13-3 run as the Tarpons earned a 49-32 win over the Blue Jays.
St. Edmund (0-15, 0-7) held a 3-2 lead after a free throw from Alex Dupre and a drive in the lane by Easten Coleman.
South Cameron (14-10, 4-2) responded with an 11-0 run, sparked by nine points from Tyler Skipper, who finished the game with 17 points.
Dupre recorded a three-point play early in the second frame as the Jays closed the gap to 13-6.
But the Tarpons answered with a 15-0 surge as South Cameron took control of the game.
Skipper scored six points in the period and Kyler Little psuhed a tip-in at the buzzer to give the Tarpons a 28-6 lead at the break.
The two teams battled for a 9-9 tie in the third period as St. Edmund fought to get back into the game.
The Jays opened the period with a 6-2 run, aided by three points from Dupre and a drive by Carter Andrus.
The Tarpons closed the period with a 7-1 run before Coleman hit a jumper in the final minute to help the Jays close the margin to 37-15.
St. Edmund did not go away quietly as the Blue Jays outscored the Tarpons 17-12 in the fourth quarter.
After six straight points by Kyler Little increased South Cameron’s lead to 43-15, Henry Brown and Luke Traha scored in the lane for the Jays.
Four points by South Cameron’s Chase James was answered by a bucket from Blue Jay Ross Fontenot.
St. Edmund closed the game with an 11-2 run including six points by Christian Fontenot and five points from Brown.
Dupre and Brown both scored seven points to lead the Blue Jays, who travel to Elton (6-9. 3-3) on Friday.
