VC earns sweep over St. Edmund

In the final non-district clash of the year, St. Edmund was swept by Vermilion Catholic.
The Lady Eagles exploded for an 11-2 first quarter run as VC cruised to a 56-29 win over the Lady Jays.
Anne Katherine Gallet led the Lady Eagles with eight points, while Kelli Frith added three free throws.
Abby Miller scored the only points for the Lady Jays in the quarter.
St. Edmund regrouped for a 20-17 second quarter surge to close the gap to 28-22 at the break.
Gabby Fontenot scored 10 points for the Lady Jays, including two three-pointers.
Kinsley Marcantel added two treys, while Maggie Larriviere chipped in four points.
Ainsley Mallett scored eight points in the period to spark VC.
Vermilion Catholic (11-3) outscored St. Edmund (3-9) 16-11 in the third period to put the game out of reach.
Mallett pushed in five points, while Jay Demouchet scored four points in the period for VC.
Savannah DeVillier scored three points for the Lady Jays, while Rebecca Benoit, Miller and Fontenot chipped in two points each.
VC sealed the win with a 12-6 fourth quarter run, sparked by four points each from Mallett and Kylie White.
Mallett and Gallet led the Lady Eagles with 17 points each on the night.
DeVillier scored all six Lady Jay points in the period to finish with nine points.
Fontenot led St. Edmund with 12 points, whole Marcantel contributed eight points.
The Lady Jays opened District 4-1A play against Basile Wednesday night and travel to South Cameron Friday night.

VC 89, St. Ed’s 23
In the boys game, Vermilion Catholic remained undefeated with a 89-23 win over St. Edmund.
The Eagles (11-0) jumped out to a 22-9 first quarter advantage, led by strong performances from Ethan Lege, Kris Constantine, Mo Maxile and JT Lege.
Alex Dupre led the Jays with four points in the period, wile Carter Andrus and Luke Trahan chipped in a bucket each.
VC added a 19-6 run in the second frame to push ahead 41-15 at the break.
Ethan Lege hit two treys, while reserves Trevian Lane had seven points and Quentin Marshall added five points off the bench.
Henry Brown had five points and Andrus chipped in a free throw for the Jays.
VC exploded for a 36-2 third quarter surge, aided by eight points from Constantine and five points each by Marshall and Lane.
Brown hit two free throws for the only Jay points in the period.
The Eagles closed the game with a 12-6 fourth quarter as Dupre scored four points for the Jays to finish with eight points.
Brown also finished with eight points.
Constantine led VC with 14 points.
The Blue Jays open district play Jan. 3 against Elton.
