School Board moving toward tax election

The St. Landry Parish School Board moved toward putting tax proposals before voters in November to raise employee pay and fund improvements to high school athletic facilities and playgrounds. The Board unanimously approved advancing two proposals to future meetings.

St. Landry Parish principal is among semi-finalists for principal award

Kellie Rabalais, principal of Palmetto Elementary in St. Landry Parish, is among the Louisiana Department of Education today announced the 2022 Teacher and Principal of the Year Semifinalists. The 48 semifinalists are elementary, middle and high school educators from school systems across the state.

A plan to change Highland Elementary into an early learning center focused on 4-year-olds and move its pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade students to Eunice’s three other elementary school passed without dissent at St. Landry Parish School Board meeting Monday.

A plan to change how pre-school and elementary school students are organized in Eunice was brought to the St. Landry Parish School Board for discussion Thursday. Highland Elementary would become an early learning center with a focus on 4-year-olds.

School Board asks for a new direction

Some St. Landry Parish School Board member asked the superintendent to find a different way to improve under-performing schools. The request, which drew a passionate response from Superintendent Patrick Jenkins, came at the end of the Board’s meeting Thursday.

Auditor says School Board finances are very healthy

The St. Landry Parish School Board had a very good year financially in 2020, according to auditor Casey Ardoin of Kolder, Salven & Company. Ardoin presented the annual audit at the School Board’s meeting Thursday.

School Board about to alter its meeting format

For years the St. Landry Parish School Board has followed a procedure of committee meetings followed by a regular meeting with all Board members present. At its Dec. 3 meeting the Board met as a committee of the whole prior to the regular session.

Board rates superintendent proficient

St. Landry Parish School Superintendent Patrick Jenkins received a proficient score in an annual evaluation conducted by the School Board on Thursday. Jenkins was scored by 12 of the 13 Board members with an average score of 33.6. In 2019, the Board’s average score rated him at 31.
