Eunice Police are following leads, but do not know why a man was shot in the leg while walking in the 700 block of Lewis Street early Sunday.
Police Chief Randy Fontenot said the shooting may be a case of mistaken identity.
Police were dispatched to the scene 18 minutes into Sunday with a report of a drive-by shooting.
According to the dispatch logs, several shell casings were found on East Maple and more near a barber shop.
“The guy that got shot we don’t know why they would have shot him. He’s not one we’ve ever had trouble with. He’s not involved in any of the little gang activity in town. So, we are just baffled by that one,” Fontenot said.
The bullet went in and exited without causing any serious injury, he said.
Several rounds were fired, but the man was hit only once.
Fontenot said the type of gun used is not being released.
The victim wasn’t sure he saw a vehicle in the area. But he wasn’t sure where the shots came from. He heard the shots. He felt the sudden warm sensation in his leg. He saw a vehicle, but he wasn’t sure where the shots came from,” Fontenot said.
Investigators have suspects, he said, but are working on verification.
“We just have to look into it some more,” he said.
Despite the shooting, Fontenot said the end of the year was quiet for police.
