The Prairie Acadian Cultural Center in Eunice is temporarily closed as of Wednesday.
Air conditioning needs have persisted and continue to result in temporary closures. The Prairie Acadian Cultural Center of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve is located at 250 West Park Avenue, Eunice. More information is available at 337-457-8490 or at nps.gov/jela.
“After an air conditioning breakdown forced the closure of the Liberty Theater and the cancellation of the weekly Rendez-vous des Cajuns live music show, the National Park Service offered to host and pay for the show at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center so we could share it with the public with no admission charge,” said Supervisory Park Ranger Angela Rathle. “We are now disappointed to learn that the air conditioning system at the center needs additional repairs and that the center will have to close and cancel scheduled programming, including Rendez-vous des Cajuns.”
Rathle said, “The park’s facility maintenance team continues to work on temporary and long-term solutions to the air conditioning situation. We are also working with city officials to provide the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center’s regularly scheduled programs.”
The Prairie Acadian Cultural Center is managed by the National Park Service as part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. The center features exhibits interpreting the culture of the Acadians who settled the prairies of southwest Louisiana. Folklife demonstrations include foodways presentations, Cajun music, dancing, quilting and other handmade crafts. The center is currently closed, and its usual hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The center is closed on all federal holidays but open on Mardi Gras. Admission to the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center is free and all activities and demonstrations are free and open to the public.
