The following are from the February 2001 files of The Eunice News.
The news from City Hall was about natural gas bills. The city’s bill was nearing $600,000 a month compared to $200,000 the previous year. Mayor Ken Peart and councilmen were expressing concerns about the city’s bill and those of customers. Peart said the gas cost was the highest local gas on record. A partial pay plan eventually was approved for customers.
Clarence Brown, 75, received an honorary high school diploma from Eunice Adult Education School Principal Mike Dupre on behalf of state Education Superintendent Cecil Picard. Brown’s education was interrupted by World War II.
Acadia Parish teachers and support workers were poised to all in sick on Monday in a pay protest. Starting pay for teacher in Acadia Parish was reported at $23,779.
Seven Eunice High students were headed for state competition at an FBLA conference. They students were Kayla Prather, Sara Moser, Mitzi Miller, Lydia Bourque, Nicodemus Bernard, Becky Dischler and Amy Hall.
Eunice High football players on the All-State team were Kyle Savant, Ryan Deshotel and Jerold Darby. Darby was on the first team and Savant and Deshotel were honorable mention picks.
Lights were installed at the Eunice High baseball field. Coach Scott Phillips said for the first time it will be possible to have night games
