The following are from the February 2001 files of The Eunice News.
On Saturday, Feb. 24, the Eunice Mardi Gras was starting to unfold. Mayor Ken Peart said folks from all over the world were present. A photo on the front page showed the Marc and Ann Savoy jam session. A license plate check found out of state plates from Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Texas, Florida, Vermont and Ohio.
Harry Summerlin, St. Edmund principal, was taking part in the LEADTech program, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Scouts from Pack 495 visited the Eunice Police Department. Leading the tour was Lt. Bruce Vige. Scout pictured on the tour were Kourt Deshotel, Tyler LeJeune and Alonzo Guillory. Members of the troop were also shown touring the fire department. They included Branden Langley, Zachary Arnold. They was attended by Crystal LeJeune, assistant cubmaster, and Charles LeJeune, cubmaster. Escorting the group were Brenda Lomas, Mike Fontenot, Daryl Brown and Bernard Brown.

Mayor Bob Morris had completed more than a year in office. Among the accomplishments he cited were closing a $400,000 budget deficit, ordinance to speed the cleanup of dilapidated houses, baggy pants ordinance, settled firefighters lawsuit, reestablished an industrial board, annexed Eunice Superette, got old Moosa nursing home sites cleaned up, raised pay of all city employees, bought two new fire trucks, contracted grass cutting, new computer system, reduced inmate medical costs and new inmate meal plan.
Eunice native Jason Johnson, the “Cajun Sensation,” scored his 23rd sprintcar racing victory for the year in round nine of the Wanless World Series Sprintcars at Speedway City in Adelaide, Australia.

George Harrison Jr. was the guest speaker at the Highland Elementary Black History Month program. Harrison was a former Highland student and 1997 graduate of Eunice High School. He was a mechanical engineer at NASA.
