St. Landry Parish food pantries and shelters are looking to stock their shelves with food for families in need this season.
Food will be collected starting at 6 a.m. Dec. 4 at the Opelousas Civic Center parking lot on Creswell Lane, in Opelousas.
Food will be accepted until 8 p.m. Tuesday.
“You don’t even have to get out of your car,” Ginger LeCompte, executive director of St. Landry-Evangeline United Way, a community partner in the food drive effort, said.
“We will have volunteers providing “curb service” and picking up food items from donors’ cars as they drive up,’ she said. “We are hoping that local businesses will join us in helping our less fortunate neighbors with a food drive at your own business.”
The St. Landry-Evangeline United Way organizes the annual food drive in St. Landry Parish, sponsored by KLFY TV10 and FoodNet of Acadiana.
Food and shelter programs benefiting from the Food for Families food drive include ICONS of Opelousas; St. Landry Parish Community Action Agency; Port Barre; The Refinery Mission; the food bank that serves Morrow, Melville and Palmetto; and Christian Rural Service Center of Lawtell.
FoodNet pantries need donations of non-perishables such as canned meats and vegetables, peanut butter, soups and stews, canned or dried beans and peas, rice and pasta, cereals, fruit juices, prepared box mixes, and dehydrated milk, canned milk and instant breakfasts. Financial donations and Walmart gift cards are also accepted.
