The 33rd annual Here’s the Beef Cook-off is scheduled March 3 at the St. Landry Parish Ag Arena, U.S. 190 West, Opelousas.
The St. Landry Parish Cattlemen’s Association dedicated this year’s cook-off to Dalton Comeaux, who organized and was a member of the St. Landry Parish Cattlemen’s Association. Comeaux died on Jan. 5. He was 95 years old
Comeaux was a retired county agricultural agent. He worked for 25 years in St. Landry Parish for the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service.
The cook-off categories are gourmet, brisket, road, stew or rice and gravy, tongue, ground meat and miscellaneous.
Prizes in each category are: first place, $20 and a plaque; and second place, $10 and a plaque.
The overall champion will receive $100 and a plaque. The reserve champion will be receive $50 and a plaque.
Special awards for best booth decor and best-dressed team will be plaques.
Admission to the cook-off is $5 for those 15 and older.
Cook-off judging begins at 12:30 p.m.
Cook-off activities include:
— Non-motorized trail ride beginning at 8:30 a.m. Entry is $15 and includes food.
— Fun jump for children.
— Live music beginning at 10 a.m. with Ken Holloway; followed by Kevin Naquin and Ossun Playboys from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
The event is sponsored by the St. Landry Parish Cattlemen’s Association and St. Landry Parish Cattlewomen’s Association.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the Opelousas Lions Club.
