Household Hazardous Waste Day set Aug. 18

It’s time to get rid of all those things that you can’t just put in the trash can.
Household Hazardous Waste Day for Acadia Parish will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Rice Arena, 159 Cherokee Drive.
Participants must present a photo ID showing an Acadia Parish address.
Acceptable items include:
• Automotive products, such as used oil, oil filters, antifreeze, fuel, car batteries, tires (without rims);
• Paints, paint thinners and solvents, spray cans, brush cleaners, paint strippers, lacquers, woods sealers, turpentine;
• Gardening products, such as insect killers (pesticides/fertilizers), weed killers, unclean sprayers and spreaders;
• Cleaning products, including drain cleaners, degreasers and oven cleaners, bleach and ammonia, cleaning solvents and spot removers, cleaner concentrates (liquid/powder);
• Pool chemicals, such as acids and chlorine;
• Glues and solvents, thermometers, mercury items; and
• Fluorescent bulbs and compact bulbs.
Not acceptable items include radioactive waste (including smoke detectors), PCB oil or light ballasts, dioxin containing waste, explosives (gun powder/blasting caps), DEA listed prescription drugs, bio-hazardous medical waste and municipal garbage.
