A software issue is holding up the registration of bicycles in Eunice, Police Chief Randy Fontenot said.
Fontenot said software issues surfaced as he works to implement a system to register bicycles.
The Board of Aldermen are being asked to change the registration to a one-time fee of $5. The current fee is $3 with a $1 annual renewal.
Only residents will be required to register their bicycles operated on public roads.
The fee is to pay for the stickers and operation of the registration program.
Registering bicycles will assist in finding the owner of bicycles lost or stolen in the city, he siad.
There is not age minimum for persons registering bicycles, but Fontenot said a parent is recommended if the person operating the bicycle is a minor.
Mayor Scott Fontenot attested to the registration system working with a story about his bike getting stolen when he was 12 years old. The bicycle, which was registered with the city, was found two weeks later. “It was all in pieces,” he said, but he got the frame back.
