Lafayette General Foundation is honored to announce the 2018 recipients of the Mayci Breaux Scholarship Fund. This year, the foundation chose to honor eight recipients – each being awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
The following six recipients will be attending Louisiana State University at Eunice (LSUE): Nikki Chauvin, Lauryn Laughlin, Shavonne Lewis, Hannah Mizzi, Chelsea Nowell and Taylor Thibodeaux. Two recipients, Kameron Landry and Catherine Shaw, will be attending Northwestern State University (NSU).
Awards will be given on Sept. 25 in the front lobby of Lafayette General Medical Center at 10 a.m. This is a special day, as it is also Mayci’s birthday.
“The scholarship has allowed us to build a legacy that will go on for many years and provide students with the financial assistance to complete the education that Mayci could not. She will live on through the scholarship recipients and the communities served,” said Nancy Broadhurst, executive director of Lafayette General Foundation.
The scholarship began in 2015 with an anonymous donor in Montana, just one day after the Grand Theatre shooting. Numerous donations followed, including many from Lafayette General Health employees, helping the fund grow to $20,000. The day before the fund was publically announced, Bo and Jerry Ramsay donated $5,000 on behalf of everyone affected by the shooting. After learning about the launch of the scholarship, comedian Amy Schumer, star of the movie Trainwreck, donated $25,000 to the fund, doubling the amount.
Mayci Breaux, resident of Franklin, graduated from South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) and went on to attend LSUE, where she was studying to become an ultrasound and radiologic technologist. Her scholarship fund is now over $50,000.
“I’m happy we can help someone who also wants to be in the same field that Mayci wanted to be in- a dream she’d had since high school. It’s exciting to find fellow young women who are truly dedicated to being a radiology tech. I hope they find passion in their careers, like I know Mayci would have,” said Dondie Breaux, mother of Mayci.
The Mayci Breaux Scholarship is awarded to local high school students enrolled in a radiologic technology program at a Louisiana institution. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above at the time of application.
