An investigation into a report an of umpire pulled a gun after a Eunice High vs Church Point High game ended with no arrests.
Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot said, We’ve got two sides with two completely opposite information about how the incident went down.”
Initially, police investigated whether an umpire pulled a gun in a dispute over the ejection of a Church Point player and said, “I’ll leave both of you dead here in the dirt.”
A confrontation did occur with two umpires present, a ball player and the brother of the ejected player, he said.
“We can’t even confirm whether a gun was there or not,” Fontenot said. “We have one side saying there was a gun. One said saying there wasn’t a gun, but either way the gun was not pointed at the victim.”
Even if a gun was in the umpire’s vehicle that is not illegal, he said.
“And if the umpire did remove it from the vehicle under the circumstance that would not have violated state law either unless he actually pointed it or threatened someone with it,” Fontenot said.
Police were unable to locate any witnesses who were not involved in the confrontation, he said.
Despite the difference over the presence and use of gun, the parties involved agreed they continued a discussion without any escalation, he said.
Police were called to the scene at about 8:30 p.m. March 28.
