School Board deficit projected

With only three months left in its fiscal year, the St. Landry Parish School Board is on track to finish with a $1.6 million deficit.
Tressa Miller, finance director, told the Finance Committee at an April 23 meeting that the loss had been budgeted.
Total revenue through the end of March was $81 million, which is about 79 percent of the budget revenue for the year, according to a general fund report.
There was about a $900,000 loss in March.
The system had about a $2 million profit year-to-date, but will have dificits of about $1 million in April, May and June, she said.
The school system’s balance sheet is buoyed up in January and February when property taxes arrive. In January, the district received $9.4 million and in February property tax revenues were $2.4 million.
Miller said the district has a fund balance that is 7.5 percent of the budgeted revenues. The balance puts the district in an excellent financial state, she siad.
Miller said the school system’s monthly payroll is about $7.6 million.
In other finance committee news, the parish is to receive $430,037 from the state to fund a one-time payment to certificated classroom teachers. The report to the board stated 960 employees will receive $345 each in May.
The financial reports, approved at the committee meeting, face the full School Board, which is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. Thursday in Opelousas.
