A second person has been indicted in the shooting death of Tyrie Frederick at a Christmas season party at the Southeast Community Center in Eunice.
Darron C. Carter, 21, of the 100 block of Hiawatha Street, Lafayette, was indicted on Monday by a grand jury in the 27th Judicial Court District.
The jury reported its finding to District Judge Alonzo Harris, according to a news release from Earl Taylor, St. Landry Parish district attorney.
Carter is charged with one count of second-degree murder of Tyrie Fredericks, and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felony on or about Dec. 23, 2017.
Also indicted earlier in the incident was Rontreal J. Prejean, of the 400 block of Madison Street, Lafayette. He was indicted for second-degree murder in April in Frederick’s death.
Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot said, “Between us and the DA’s office we feel pretty confident we can get a conviction.”
Fontenot said the case is the best ever worked by the St. Landry Parish District Attorney’s Office and his department.
Detective Robert Brickley was determined to make the case, he said.
“The DA was determined to get to the bottom of it too and get these people behind bars,”he said.
Frederick, 23, of Eunice died from multiple gunshots in the shooting that occurred at about 1:20 a.m. Dec. 23.
There were about 100 people at the party when the shooting occurred, he said.
Fontenot said his investigators have completed interviews with the major witnesses. Other witnesses have refused to cooperate, he said.
Carter has been identified as a member of the Gremlin Gang of Vermilion Parish.
A second degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office.
A person convicted of possessing a firearm after being convicted of certain felonies shall be imprisoned at hard labor for not less than five nor more than 20 years without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence, the news release stated.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Eunice Police at 337-457-2626. Callers will remain anonymous.
