Louisiana’s annual Free Fishing Weekend is Saturday, Sunday

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) invites the public to take part in its annual Free Fishing Weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Louisiana’s Free Fishing Weekend is an opportunity for residents and visitors to fish Louisiana waters without an otherwise required fishing license.

Eunice man arrested for setting fire to the house where he lived

State Fire Marshal deputies have arrested a Eunice man accused of setting fire to the house where he lived. Nathan Ortego, 35, was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail on one count of simple arson.

Suspect to shooting at Brownie’s arrested

A suspect to a shooting at South 2nd Street and West Maple in Eunice on April 29 was apprehended in Calcasieu Parish today with the assistance of U.S. Marshal deputies. Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot said Brian K. Thomas, of Ville Platte, was found through a tip to Crime Stoppers of St. Landry.

City budget includes major capital expenditures

Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot’s budget includes several capital expenditures and a $1 an hour pay raise for 53 full-time city employees and 50 cents for 24 part-time employees. The Board of Aldermen approved the budget at its Tuesday’s meeting.

Parish sales tax collections up over last year

Year-to-date sales tax collections in St. Landry Parish continue to outpace those of a year ago, according to a monthly report released by the St. Landry Parish School Board sales tax division. Total sales tax collections in the parish through May were $35,531,552, up $4,827,391 or 15.
