Parish reapportionment remains months away

OPELOUSAS — Reapportionment for St. Landry Parish’s Parish Council and School Board districts remains months away because of a delay in census numbers. Demographer Mike Hefner said the census count won’t be available until August or September.

Tri-Parish workforce shrinks from a year ago

The Tri-Parish workforce has lost 2,455 people from a year ago, according to statistic released Friday by the the Louisiana Workforce Commission. The workforce includes people working and those looking for a job. In March, the Tri-Parish workforce was 67,642, down from 70,097 in March 2020.

Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser pledged his assistance to help restore the Liberty Theatre in a tour on Wednesday. Reviving the theater fits into Nungesser’s role as the chief tourism official in state government. He emphasized that role in addressing the Eunice Rotary Club before his tour of theater.

Catalytic converter thefts on the rise

Reports of stolen catalytic converters off vehicles are increasing in Eunice, which follows a national trend. The Eunice Police Department radio dispatch logs noted two instances on Monday — one at Sears and the other at the John R. Young dealership.

First criminal trial held in 27th Distirct since onset of COVID-19

OPELOUSAS — A jury found an Opelousas man guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of death of his wife in what St. Landry Parish District Attorney Chad Pitre said was the first criminal trial since the onset of COVID-19. The jury verdict came on Friday for Daniel E.
