Celebrated WW2 veteran Gournay dies: HIs story retold

Harold Gournay, who was one of the most celebrated veterans in Eunice, died Thursday. He was 100 years old. Gournay was a World War II veteran. He was in a B-17 bomber shot down over Yugoslavia in September 1944. Gournay bailed out, was captured and was a prisoner of war until the war ended.

Veterans Day program is Monday

Veterans Day in Eunice will be celebrated Monday at the VFW Post 8971 located at U.S. 190 east. The outdoor program, weather permitting, will begin at 11 a.m. Gumbo will be served. Guest speakers will be state Rep. Phillip DeVillier and VFW Post 8971 Commander Don Reber.

Fire rating improves, chief reports

The Eunice Fire Chief Michael Arnold announced Friday that the city’s fire rating has improved from 4 to 3. The area outside of the city limits in St. Landry Fire District 6 and Acadia Fire District 4 also improved from a 6 to a 5, he stated.

Arrest made in Shell station shooting

Eunice Police weren’t ready to discuss any details Friday, but did report that De’Vidre Domal Doyle, 19, of the 500 block of Fred Street, Eunice, has been arrested in connection with the Oct. 26 shooting at the Shell station on U.S. 190. Doyle has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Paul Anthony Leger will be held at 10:00 a.m. on November 9, 2019 at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Lawtell, LA. The Reverend Austin Leger will celebrate the Mass. Rite of committal will follow in the church cemetery.
