Ville Platte council adopts amended and new fiscal budgets

The Ville Platte city council voted Friday to adopt an amended budget for the fiscal year ending June 30 and also voted to adopt a budget for the fiscal year beginning Monday. The newly adopted amended budget shows a surplus in excess of $3 million dollars.

CFMA Cajun Awards and Music Festival planned in Rayne

The 2019 annual Le Cajun – CFMA annual Cajun Awards and Music Festival will be held Aug. 16-17 at the Rayne Civic Center. The awards ceremony will be hosted by the Cajun-French Music Association of Louisiana, with Cajun musicians from throughout the area to be in attendance and honored.

A $1.8 million Maple Avenue paving project escaped a veto by Gov. John Bel Edwards as happened in previous years. Edwards signed the 2019 Capital Outlay Bill — Act 20 — on Monday, providing nearly $1.5 billion in new funding for construction and infrastructure improvements throughout the state.

Tri-Parish jobless rates down, workforce stable

Tri-Parish unemployment rates in May were down from a year ago and the workforce of 68,125 was down 297 from a year ago, according to not seasonally adjusted numbers from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The state’s unemployment rate in May was 4.1 percent, down 0.7 percent from May 2018.
