Maple Avenue overlay falls to veto pen

Number one on Gov. John Bel Edwards’ veto list was a $1.7 million overlay project for Maple Avenue, La. 91, in Eunice. The vetoes were announced Wednesday. State Rep. Phillip DeVillier, R-Eunice, pointed to partisan politics for the governor’s veto.

School Board divided on repair

If a tax proposition had passed in March, Port Barre High School was destined to get a new building. But the tax failed and the St. Landry Parish School Board has about $3 million left from a $10 million bond issue generated by existing revenue, which makes every thousand dollars count dearly.

Budget is on city agenda

The city’s next budget and amending its present budget are on the agenda for the Eunice Board of Aldermen’s meeting Tuesday. Hearings on the budgets are scheduled at 6:15 p.m. in the second floor meeting room to be followed by the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Courthouse security to change

The tight budget bucks surfaced at the St. Landry Parish Council meeting as a security change at the courthouse was approved. Parish President Bill Fontenot said Sheriff Bobby Guidroz discovered his office needed additional funding for providing security at the courthouse and the courthouse annex.
