Crash in Acadia Parish leaves 1 dead

On March 26, shortly after 8 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I was notified of a two-vehicle fatality crash on Interstate 10 eastbound near mile marker 68 (between Egan and Jennings) in Acadia Parish. The crash claimed the life of 35-year-old Colette Babineaux of Lafayette.

Dorothy “Dot” Langlinais, 67, passed away on March 20, 2022, at her residence in Eunice. Dot was a beloved mother and grandmother who enjoyed having conversations, coffee, reading her bible, sharing her faith, working in her garden, and helping others.

Voters crush school tax proposals

St. Landry Parish voters overwhelmingly rejected three tax propositions in Saturday’s election. Proposition 1, which asked for a 9.9-mill, 10-year property tax to raise about $6.6 million annually for pay raises, was rejected by 75% vote 12,962 votes cast. There were 9,770 votes against the tax.

Early votes are against School Board tax proposals

The three St. Landry Parish School Board tax propositions were crushed in early voting. According to the state Secretary of State’s website, Proposition 1 for an employee pay raise lost with only 30% of the 3,237 early votes voting for it.

Sons experienced father’s evolution into a segregationist

Though 57 years have passed, Leland Boyd still can’t forget the smell of burnt human flesh.  In December 1964, Leland, then 12, stood in the doorway of a hospital room, where Frank Morris, a 51-year-old Black man from Ferriday, lay in critical condition after two men had torched his shoe shop.

History tells us to take tyrants like Putin seriously

The world seemed surprised when Hitler annexed the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia in 1938. More surprised when he invaded Poland in 1939 and flabbergasted when he marched into the Soviet Union in 1941. Never underestimate the ambitions of an evil tyrant.

Are you terrible at remembering names?

If you have a habit of forgetting names as soon as you’re introduced, join the club. In all fairness, I have a mind like a steel trap when it comes to appointments, debts and trivia; it’s just that names tend to chew their leg off in order to escape. Bless his heart, my son Gideon is even worse.

Lumber and the lucky Lehman

According to family tradition, the Lehman, the first schooner used by pioneer Calcasieu lumberman Daniel Goos, was named after an old sea captain who he had known for many years.
