The following are arrests reported by the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office. January 7 Nicholas Oneal Bias, 29, 400 block of Magnolia Street, Opelousas. Bench warrant (2 counts). Arrested by St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office. Christopher Javon Pierre, 22, 600 block of East South Street, Opelousas.

Registration opens for École Saint-Landry, French-immersion in Sunset

SUNSET — Registration for École Saint-Landry’s second year is open. “We are so honored to work to provide St. Landry Parish parents this amazing educational option for their children,” said Lindsay Smythe, École Saint-Landry school leader. “Our first year as a school has exceeded all expectations.

Parish Council can’t find a way around barricaded road

The St. Landry Parish Council once again ran up against a barricaded road in a subdivision south of Opelousas. The barricade on Lamar Lane blocks the way to Seminole Lane and separates the Shawnee and Ranch subdivisions.

7 positions open on the parish tourist commission

The current and past directors of the St. Landry Parish Tourist Commission requested the St. Landry Parish Council follow state law in filling seven seats. The Council has been filling seats on the commission by requesting applications.

School Board requires masks in school

By Harlan Kirgan Editor OPELOUSAS — The St. Landry Parish School Board on a 9-2 vote is requiring students and employees to wear masks until the COVID test positivity rate reaches 5% or below. The school system has its own testing program, which is showing positivity rates for the virus at 10%.

2 children die in Opelousas house fire

State Fire Marshal deputies continue investigating the circumstances surrounding a house fire in Opelousas that claimed the life of two children.   Just before 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday, the Opelousas Fire Department responded to a fire call at a house located in the 1900 block of Jake Drive.
